FarkerinMN: How could it possibly cost $13k to clean that up, especially when its already outside. There is not really all that much risk from asbestos once its in an open environment. But also why would the driver even bother illegally dumping it, around here I can take asbestos to the dump at a rate of $23/ton they just ask that I call ahead so they can dig a hole for me to dump it in and bury it.


The estimate for the World Trade Center asbestos removal was around $1 billion before 9/11. Luckily for the owners it all ended up in the lungs of the first responders.

The important part is reducing the risk of breathing it in, nobody can breath it once it is buried.  I was told that as long as it can't be disturbed you are not at risk, but once you start moving and handling it that is a different story.


Yeah, I personally love asbestos to be honest, it's a wonder material, fire resistant, chemical resistant, mold resistant, high tensile strength, and it won't oxidize and break down over time.  Just getting it in loose fiber form is dangerous, an asbestos fiber can stay suspended in the air for 72 hours after it's initial disturbance.

Girion47: why dump it?  Just bag it up, and put it in peoples trash cans on garbage day.  It looks like normal garbage and residential asbestos removal doesn't require any special permitting.

arcas: So while there's footage showing the truck dumping the waste, the article does not say whether footage exists showing who was driving the truck at the time.  So if they do locate the truck, the owner will simply say "I wasn't driving" and that'll be that.


You really need to do asbestos you can here.
