This.  Clogged sinks, mold and vermin don't happen on their own.  If the place didn't have clogs, mold and vermin before you moved in, you are the most likely the problem and you are responsible for repairs or you will lose your security deposit.

I have a heated attached garage on my house of 20 years.  It cant be overstated how much easier it makes Minnesota winters.

Were it not for that, I think I may well have made the move already.  Nothing more miserable than an ice cold car when you're half awake, that finally warms up about the time you pull into work.

My own escape plan includes Thousand Oaks, Ca. I do service for restaurants and retail and could end up working anywhere.  Do techs charge for their time in gridlock?  Do they only work in certain areas?

I could live with doing one service call a day. so long as I can bill it out at 5 or 6 hours.

Feh.  I have never seen an illegal that isnt pretty much a building destroying rat.  The apartment was probably in great shape until they moved in.  Now that they destroyed it, they are complaining about its condition.  Sorry but you wont get my sympathy that way.

You still work on lab? That's a hell of a commute. One of my devs lives in marina del ray and commutes to Pasadena every day. She's farking bug nuts.

It's funny, I've lived in California for almost 10 years and have been thinking about moving back to the Midwest. I've realized that I'll never be able to afford a house out here and really don't want to live in crappy apartments the rest of my life. I'm tired of the people and the city in general. Yeah the weather is nice but you seriously pay for it. I can buy a mansion back home for what a tiny house sells for out here. But i also grew up a small town country kid so I think the older I get the more I gravitate towards that anyway.

3) I can't live where there are bars on the windows. I want my parents to come visit.
4) $2,000-$2,200 would be a good rent window.
5) At least 2 bedrooms.

I don't mind a bit of a commute. Wife and I both have cars and solid work.

La Habra/Whittier/La Mirada come to mind, if no one has mentioned them yet.  You could take the 605N to City of Industry, your wife could take Beach Blvd all the way to HB.  Some parts of Whittier are ghetto, but others are nice - an Executive VP for my company lives in Whittier.

The difference is that there are actually jobs in Ca.  At the risk of sounding elitist, what I mean is jobs for college educated professionals.  You just dont find many biotech, medical device or software jobs in bumfark Wisconsin.  Contrary to what you seem to state above the jobs do pay more here too.  A mid level engineer makes in the low to mid 100,000k range in the SF bay area or in LA.  Even when I was doing nothing more than mindless labor in a bakery packaging department while working my way through college I was making 60k a year.  Do they pay more compared to other areas given the higher housing and other living costs? Probably not, but at least we have tolerable weather and good job options.

Earthquakes are not really a worry.  Sure, they happen, but so do tornadoes, hurricanes, etc..  I find the later much more frightening and cant imagine why folks live in places where they occur.  It is really what you have become acclimated to.  A Californian sees earthquakes as a rare, often harmless event that is easy to prepare for but is terrified by the idea of a tornado.  The mid-westerner has the opposite view.  Its just a frame of reference issue.

Lakewood/Pico Rivera/Downey would work.  I lived in Long Beach for years (next to Lakewood), it's a pretty good hub, all the LA freeways radiate out of there because of the port.


Some parts of Downey and Lakewood are decent. Pico?? Shopping-wise, it sucks. Try Montebello, particularly the area north of Beverly Blvd. Whittier has some nice areas as well.

Actually, Culver City or the decent parts of Torrance would be better for your wife. You might have a slightly rough commute on the eastbound 10 to the 60, but once you hit the 60, you'll be flying, as the really bad traffic on said freeway is westbound.

Hey now. My mom used to manage a few of those buildings that have basements, and there were waiting lists to get in. Her friend spent a buttload of money after the quake to refit and upgrade them, and they were  quite nice. Close to the Mission too, so one was never wanting for a good tacqueria. I wish her friend was still alive so i could fly into oakland or sfo i/o Charles Schultz in santa rosa when I visit my mum .

I'd suggest Torrance/South Redondo area.
Unfortunately, there's nothing worth living in halfway between Industry and Hermosa, so you might as well stay in the South Bay and deal with the commute (which will be awful). Belmont Shore is nice, too, but then you'd both have to deal with traffic.

Been living in North Redondo for almost a year and work in El Segundo commute is 15 / 20 mins, the south bay is really really nice, anything west of the 405 and you'll be fine. I used to live (up to a year and a half ago) in caribbean country so being close to the beach is a big plus for me.

I got this apartment through a management company, it's 1 bed / 1 bath, walk in closet, carport garage and I pay 1100 with trash and water included.

I'd say what's the point of making both of you miserable with hour long commutes when you could live in Redondo/Hermosa/Manhattan B, and only one of you would have a shiatty commute. There's nothing pretty near City of Industry.

Moved to san diego from hawaii and have lived on east coast and mid west.  Admittedly have become a weather wimp , my job provides a geographic housing bonus, and i bought at pretty close to bottom here.  Golf year, BBQ, etc year round outside....yeah lots of people and traffic but you can have Minnesota.

Freshwater inland Lake =/= the Pacific Ocean. Can you surf on the waves in the great lakes? Not very often, and when you can, you likely don't want to be out in it.

Yes, Minnesota/Wisconson/Michigan have some of the best lake/river camping areas in the world, it doesn't make up for the Pacific.

It took almost fourmonths to get the police to kick mine out, and I wasn't even able to file the paperwork until they were 30 days late.

It is seriously the closest I've ever come to wanting to kill a person. Or perhaps to burn down my own nose in order to spite my face.

You're welcome. They sell lox there occasionally. Unfortunately the other place I go for smoked fish closed down sometime last year when I was living out of state. There's still good places to look in Old Sac though.

SurelyShirley- My apologies. I can get to my favorite beach in San Francisco in 75 minutes. Pardon me for rounding down. But Sacramento is NOT humid. Nice to see that's the only piece of the three you latched on to though. Someone holds a grudge for no reason. What happened honey, did you get lost in midtown and go the wrong way down a one-way street? Or maybe you didn't know where to look for good food because you used UrbanSpoon and didn't just ask a local. Sorry for your troubles either way.

A few years ago while working in my previous employ to a company that rhymes with Hallmart, I was chit chatting with the interal security guy responsible for all the cable running and hardwiring of systems for a few states. We got to talking about housing and renting as I had just started renting a place. He told me his parents were renting 3 places but as soon as the tenants moved, they were selling.  And they would never rent to immigrants again. Apparently, they had a rented to an immigrant family of latino background.  Quiet people, always paid on time, never complained. Until they left. They go into the unit, and the carpet has to be replaced, it's ruined. And it was new a year ago. But while he is writing up his list of stuff that needs to be fixed he leans against the wall.  It moves. Looks fine though. So he starts pushing on it and notices a tone of cracks forming on the plaster. He looks for the stud and punches a hole away from it.  It's duct tape. He grabs and pulls back a five foot by six foot patch of duct tape covering a whole in the wall of equal size that the renters had made, covered, plastered, and painted.

You're welcome. They sell lox there occasionally. Unfortunately the other place I go for smoked fish closed down sometime last year when I was living out of state. There's still good places to look in Old Sac though.


This is a good kosher 'style' restaurant.

Yeah, no.  It's like saying Sam's Hof Brau is a good deli.  Sorry, but that's just a sandwich shop.

As for Old Sac, there is nothing there but chains.  And gangs.
