I read it without scratching myself. I'm used to suppressing that impulse because I have naturally very itchy skin.

I'm confident that there is a psychological aspect because when I see the first mosquito my skin becomes very sensitive, even when they aren't digging into my flesh.

When I first wrote about this subject years ago, it was thought itching was a mild form of pain. Nobody thinks that now.

I thought that up to now, partly for the reason stated in the column: pain makes itching go away.

I guess I'm the odd duck, I didn't even get an inkling of an itch anywhere. I am, however, one of those people that yawns in response to any other yawning. Even just looking looking at pictures of yawning people or animals. Heck I've yawned twice just typing this sentence about yawning.

Your skin is the largest organ and it is replenishing itself constantly. It molts completely about every two weeks. It grows, flexes, stretches and shrinks with your daily activities. Itching is just discomfort on your skin as a consequence of these activities.

Scratching resettles it.

Sometimes, I tickle the roof of my mouth with my tongue which causes the roof of my mouth to itch. I then use my tongue to rub and scratch at the roof of my mouth for relief. Unfortunately, this also tickles and makes it itch some more. It's a damnable cycle which only stops when something distracts me.

My surmise: itching is sometimes a signal that an area requires debridement--a physical removal of sloughing cells--in order to heal more efficiently.

You are right to a point. Fine sandpaper does wonders on scar tissue. 400 grit at a minimum. 80, not so much to my chagrin one night after a pint of rum
