Happy Hours: Okay, about 30 seconds into it and maybe it does suck. Wow - this just goes to show how much the rest of the music from the '80s sucked.

It didn't suck. It was minimalist. There was a huge influx of new technology in the form of mixers and sequencers, but they were very very limited as to what they could do, at least compared with a laptop running ProTools today. Creating something interesting with what they had was an exercise in patience and creativity. Granted, some of the music sucked, but Numan did pretty well. And the bass shadowing the silly synth line sounds great on headphones.
