I think this quote sums it up pretty well, "He acts like he's treating all of us to his amazing whistling show and that we should all be so lucky to hear him and his magical ability."

Add that to his own quote of "people who express themselves freely should be held in the highest regard, not the lowest regard," and he sounds like your typical self-righteous dbag that's not much different than someone who is constantly proselytizing their beliefs - which you can't do in front of someone's business either.

I do not see it that way. He was annoying the hundreds of people within a one block radius around him...this is no different than loud sub woofers. I am more than certain that the cops have been called on this guy multiple times, and that they have had many words (perhaps not as many as the linked, unnecessarily long article)...he refused to stop and the cops did something about it.

So the guy is standing where he's been asked to leave, whistling as loudly as he can in a monotone (not some happy-go-lucky tune, but just a single note, as loud as he can, constantly), because God told him to. After repeatedly asking him to leave, or repeatedly asking him to stop following them and whistling loudly at them, businesses and citizens have reported him to the police. Because the normal ways you deal with adults (asking them to stop) were ineffective. The police have taken the steps the law allows, first talking to him, then citing him, then putting him before the magistrate... and the guy keeps up his disturbing whistling and purposefully Annoying for Jesus. Finally, the only solution is jail. Which, by the way, isn't stopping him either.

Replace "whistling" with "blowing a goddamn air horn", and you may be less likely to defend the guy.

Personally, I think he should be referred for psychiatric evaluation. He's obviously incapable of understanding civility, and may also be incapable of understanding morality. One day, he may snap and decide to strangle the lady he's following and whistling at. Society should help him. Perhaps he deserves the same quality care that our schoolchildren get - drug his ass until he doesn't feel like whistling any more.

Or, as someone else, mentioned, place him in for a 72-hour evaluation and perhaps he'll trip down a flight of stairs and fark up his mouth enough that he won't be able to keep it up any more.

It's not like this is some random guy walking down the street who got arrested for whistling. He thinks its his mission from god to do this all day, every day, as loud as he can no matter who it bothers or what it disrupts. He's a farking nut, and a criminal. He's been convicted of multiple offenses NOT related to this, and the recent ruling was the result of hundreds of complaints and multiple run-ins with the law specifically related to it.

If you think this is somehow what America stands for, you need to think a bit harder about the rights of others to not be contantly disturbed in the personal and professional dealings by some god-boy noise-machine who is intentionally flouting the law for Jesus.

It's not my place to dictate to another person my own personal tastes. Up to the point that the sound can cause some sort of harm (hearing damage or impairing the ability of other drivers to sirens, horns or other necessary indicators one requires to hear while driving) it's up to the individual to choose how to behave, and I have to tolerate it. Annoyance is not harm. Some people might be annoyed by "dem queers" marrying, but that is NOT grounds for denying them rights. "I don't like it, it bothers me" is never a good basis for a law.

Maybe we should ban fat people from wearing "sexy" clothing because it's bad for business when other people have to see their disgusting bodies molded into clothing that is designed for someone half their size? That cannot be good for an eatery, now can it? Oh, and while we are at it, cross-dressers have to go too, because obviously children shouldn't be exposed to their perversions. People with deformities, cripples and midgets are just... eww... so let's make sure no business has to suffer the loss of customers who are put off by the presence of such... creatures. And so it goes.

He's been convicted of multiple offenses NOT related to this, and the recent ruling was the result of hundreds of complaints and multiple run-ins with the law specifically related to it.

If you think this is somehow what America stands for, you need to think a bit harder about the rights of others to not be contantly disturbed in the personal and professional dealings by some god-boy noise-machine who is intentionally flouting the law for Jesus.

This is not some 85 year old grandpa walking down the street whistling "You Are My Sunshine"...this is some AW tool who thinks that he is on a mission from God to be as loud as he can.

This is clearly a case of disturbing the peace. It is silly, but he is not following the law.

Weaver95 - You are telling me that as a shop owner, perhaps a restaurant with outdoor dining, you are totally cool with this guy sitting on a bench adjacent to your restaurant whistling as loud as he can, pissing off your paying customers? In this specific instance, you would rather support "the right" for one to be as loud and as annoying as possible?

I do not see it that way. He was annoying the hundreds of people within a one block radius around him...this is no different than loud sub woofers. I am more than certain that the cops have been called on this guy multiple times, and that they have had many words (perhaps not as many as the linked, unnecessarily long article)...he refused to stop and the cops did something about it.

Take away the fact that this guy was arrested because of whistling, and we will just call it "noise." You think it is acceptable for one single person to annoy the hell out of hundreds? How would you have dealt with this situation if you were the cops and gotten multiple calls about this guy?

i's been mentioned, but how about screaming kids? let's get a court order on them too.

Infants who have not yet learned to stop crying and who developmentally have no concept of society or their impact on others are nowhere close to a guy intentionally whistling loudly in public for Jesus.

oh for fark sake dude. screaming kids at parks, boisterous groups of adults having a good time. it's downtown. and in portland if he were doing something 'ethnic' they would say it was diversity and it was good. get the centipedes out of your vagina and fark your 'court ordering someone for liking what you don't like' mentality.
