I was hoping to see Datsyuk become Captain after Lidrstom retired but I'm glad to see Zetterberg wearing the "C."

I enjoyed watching that game.  Hank's my favorite player on the team, so I was thrilled to see him get the hat trick.  Too bad I don't live in Detroit, I'd be getting me some curly fries today.

dstanley: What's with giving away the sticks?

A lot of the time, the players as they're walking toward the tunnel to head to the dressing room, will hand their sticks to kids that are sitting/standing around that entrance there.  If they're named one of the 3 stars of the game, they'll occasionally take another stick out on the ice with them, like Zetterberg did, and give away two sticks, instead of just one.  It's a neat way for a kid to get a game-used stick from one of their favorite players.

Hockey players are great to there fans. I remember going to the crappy Miami Arena when I was a kid to watch Panthers games. Players like Mellamby, Neidermeyer, and Laus would give gear and sticks to the kids in the crowd after almost every win during the year of the rat

Red Wings are starting to play much better. More effort like the 1st and 3rd periods of this game, and like the Dallas game the other night, and the Wings can be right back in the race. Western Conference is friggin' loaded with Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, San Jose and Vancouver.

Agreed, and this is why I love our play-by-play/commentators.  They looked at the replay and were essentially going "wtf?, there's no hit to the head there."  While 95% of other teams play-by-play/commentators wouldn't ever show you the replay, AND claim it was the dirtiest hit they'd ever seen.

Good news: I just read that the major was rescinded by the league. No further punishment and no effect on future incidents.

And it was a BS call, but the only thing more crappy over the last two weeks than everyone's defense has been the officiating.

? about Penalty Shots.  I've played hockey my entire life and never thought about this (or bothered to look it up).

If you get pulled down from behind on an empty net and are awarded a penatly shot.... Does the opposing team get to put their goalie back in, or does he have to sit on the bench for an open net goal?

Also, can you change your goalie before a penalty shot?

I THINK it's an automatic goal, if a penalty shot is awarded with an empty net.  Emphasis on think.

There's no penalty shot, it's an automatic goal.

Not sure if you were responding to the "While 95% of other teams play-by play..." bit or just following up on the comment threads.  To clarify if you replaced the Wings with a team like Pittsburgh and listening to their commentators when this happened.

They very rarely give away their actual sticks. NHL players have individually crafted sticks (not just "customized;" the players give specific dimensions to the manufacturers!), so the sticks the 3 stars give away are generic (though they usually sign them and then personally hand them off, so it's not like it's a crappy souvenir just cuz it's not an actual game stick). You can see in the clip that Zett hands off the souvenir one, but keeps the other one in hand as he goes into the tunnel (even though he was holding it up like he was going to give it away too).

See, you say "95%," but then you use the absolute worst offenders as your example. I think all regional announcers are homers to a certain extent (in truth, I think they're probably pressured by the networks to be more supportive if they get too honest), but there's definitely a spectrum. Between Center Ice previews, streaming random games, playoffs, and having Gamecenter this year, I think I've heard every regional crew in the league once or twice, and I'd have to say Pittsburgh are the worst of the bunch. Their do-no-evil attitude is so annoying, I'll usually watch until the Pens make some mistake, and then get so angry at the way the announcers make excuses for them I'll change to the other team's broadcast, or just watch a different game.

That said, if I was rating announcers (which I hereby nominate myself to do), I'd give Detroit's crew about a C-. They're often pretty bad too. I actually think it has to do with the size of the market. The most non-homery announcers I've heard are from Florida, Anaheim (which I hate to even admit, cuz fark the Ducks), and Dallas. And of course, Gods amongst announcers, Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda for the San Jose Sharks.

I don't know about C-.  They may not be A+ but they are one of the best in the league, and not just because they're my teams commentators.  They compliment, feature, and talk about the other teams players.  They show replays where it was obviously a blown call for BOTH teams, as well as show replays of penalties that should/shouldn't have been called for BOTH teams.  The only complaint I really have, is that Mickey Redmond sometimes goes on little rants about penalties.

What?!? "Empty net hat trick means the opposing team was dumb enough to pull the goalie for three straight goals"?!? That is quite possibly the dumbest thing I have ever heard and on Fark that's saying something. I defy you to find a single example of a team pulling its goalie and giving up three straight empty net goals, let alone three by the same player.

The Wings playing that song shows how stupid Wings fans are... the song is about someone from Detroit wanting to get out of that town so bad that they will take a train going anywhere but there...

And apparently the head is now part of the chest

I hear people tying to make that claim fairly often.  It is such a bad argument.

Every town, no matter how small will still have a South side. (and a North, East, and West side.)  It may not be formally designated but it still exists. That's how directions work. South Detroit is the Southern portion of Detroit, it isn't that hard to understand.

The argument would be correct if the song said "Born and raised south of Detroit," but it doesn't.
