At least it wasn't heroin. There's nothing worse than a furry with the syringe on top.

Richard C Stanford: Ennuipoet: I like to think of myself as open minded and accepting of all cultures, interests and nerddoms...but I must admit Furries freak me out.  I am not saying they are wrong, just that they remind me of hyper-sexual fur clad clowns...and they frighten me.

/furry clowns coming to get me, furry clowns coming to get me...

I think I'm pretty open minded but I just can't stand furries, goths, emos, hippies, or far-right dumbasses. They all just annoy me for some reason.

You're pretty open minded, until you actually have to deal with people who aren't like you. Got it.

Also FTFA: "Frankly, realistic furries would be terrifying. A REAL human-animal hybrid crosses into the uncanny valley. Keeping it stylized and more cartoonish keeps it approachable."

No, a REAL animal human hybrid would be farking awesome! A rainbow-colored mutant wolf staring at you with it's unblinking plastic eyes is stupid (and a bit creepy).

Yeah, the article's not really all that surprising. Consider the humanity that's dredged up for pretty much any convention, and you get an idea of what would show up at a furry con.

I got into the community real early during college after not coping well and having Paxil prescribed to me for a year. Pretty much everyone gets involved due to like-minded acceptance, but how involved you get can vary greatly. That's what even to this day I find so very odd about the fandom... it can be an interest, a hobby, a fetish, a lifestyle, a career, or an unhealthy obsession... and you'd be right on all accounts.

My interest peaked in the mid-90's, when I went to the only convention I went to. Back then the fandom didn't have their own conventions, so I went to Duckon at Chicago... a mostly sci-fi con with a furry element. There's only three reasons you'd go to one of these: to meet folks, to buy/sell merch, or to hook up. I'm pretty open-minded, but I heard one conversation at 3:30 in the morning about how someone broke their fur-lined handcuffs earlier that night.

It was about that time I realized I had no business being there, that I simply didn't have the interest level as everyone else around me. It's why most people that could be classified as a furry end up as lurkers. Most want acceptance and end up getting it, but the fandom as a whole is defined by the small percentage that want attention, and cons are where they cut loose. You don't really get a good cross section of the community at a con, but rather a very bright spotlight on the fringe.

tuxq: Paranoid from shrooms? I spent a spring time growing them one year, ate every one of the 24-some-odd cakes worth. I never once got paranoid. I even went to Carowinds and rode every ride -- I'm terrified of roller coasters. I couldn't stop laughing and had the best time of my life -- seriously.

Either they were a crappy strain or she's a liar.

This just in, hallucinogens do not effect everyone in the exact same way.

When you try shrooms for the first time at a furry convention, you eat way too many shrooms. When you eat way too many shrooms, you forget the English language. When you forget the English language, you can only communicate using V words. When you can only communicate using V words, you become convinced the next Ice Age is coming. When you're convinced the next Ice Age is coming, you go to an Impending Apocalypse dance party. When you go to an Impending Apocalypse dance party, you pee yourself. When you pee yourself, you think your water has broken and you're pregnant with Freddie Krueger's spawn. Don't be pregnant with Freddie Krueger's spawn.

We're all anthropomorphic animals! We even wear costumes called "clothing" to hide our real selves! Made out of actual animal hair sometimes! Often in bright, garish colors and impractical styles! We're even trained to plaster fake, dead, lifeless smiles on our faces to fit in! We even have different "personas" we use in different social settings!

Based on this...

Richard C Stanford: I proboubly just would have filmed him catching on fire while laughing.

... I'd say the problem is you, and not any of those groups.

You read something like that and realize that you've never eaten enough 'shrooms to forget English and it hits you: 'Man, I've wasted my life.'

I went to high school with a furry kid. He was the weirdest dude ever. He would always wear a wolf tail and a dog collar and dress only in shorts and a t-shirt, even when it was 20 degrees out. I once asked him why he did it and his response was "Like, I totally connect with wolves spiritually and stuff so like, I'm gonna move to like, Alaska so I can live with the wolves because like, they can teach us so much spiritually". Having actually lived in Alaska, my response was along the lines of " Well, I look forward to the news footage of the rescue team airlifting your frost and wolf bitten ass out of a tree because you charged into the woods without proper equipment and tried to pet a wild animal".

Interesting article.

Furries are pretty cool people, and most of them take the "live and let live" philosophy. Yeah, they're weird as all sh** sometimes, but I'm a Pony fan who likes Star Trek and Legos. I've got no room to stand on the nerd judgement.

The only thing that impacts the furry community disproportionately more than other nerdy subsets is the non-functional members' publicity. Going to a Star Trek con, there isn't a lot of attention paid to the two guys who write Kirk/Picard fanfics vs going to a fur con and seeing the two or three social retards acting like it.
