I'm pretty sure I remember the pirate ship as well, although that was a long while ago, and some of the details, the rope down into the closet, and slide/laundry chute from there to the laundry room seem new to me.

And just yesterday we scored all kinds of points with a new loft bed for our kid. Well that was a happy 16 hours or so!! Thanks subby.

Yay, parent fail thread!

I've seen the ship before but not the other pics. I'm a pirate ship-bed expert since I just spent eleventy-billion hours trying to find one online for my daughter. I gave up and just painted her walls. If you'd like something similar without spending six-figures, here's a nice beach bed at Pottery Barn (though they do run about $1,400):

It looks like they've added some fire truck and fire house lofts as well recently.

I have two thought son the matter: Really cool. I hope the kid loves it.

Second thought: I hope the building inspector doesn't see it be because he will probably throw a fit. I saw at least penetrations through floors (the rope ladder and the slide) that were not part of the original construction. I can see the building/code inspector shutting all that fun down pretty quick.

/sorry to be a curmudgeon. I deal with code inspectors during code inspectors. Inflexible bunch but usually well meaning.

Dads, don't beat up on yourselves. Parents who do over-the-top shiat like this aren't doing it for their kids. It's up there next to driving a Hummer in the "I'm compensating" sweepstakes.

I was think of the fire inspector actually. The fire inspector usuall takes a dim view of extra holes punched in houses that can improve the spread of fire.

Where will that kid be in a couple of years, when he's outgrown his room, but he doesn't dare say anything, because he knows that his parents spent thousands of dollars building his special place? But it's not right now--his friends laugh at him and they won't come over anymore. He wants to tell his parents that he just doesn't like his bedroom anymore, but he can't stand to destroy the hopeful looks on their faces every time they poke their head into his room, hoping that he's still playing pirate and sliding down ropes.

His FATHER spends more time playing in the pirate ship then he does now, and he has to play along, hoping that one day his dad will look up and realize that he's 14 now! practically an adult! and what kind of teenager plays in a pirate ship? He couldn't even enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, they just depressed him and reminded him that after the movie, he'd have to go home and play on his pirate ship, just like his mother and father wanted him to.

He can't wait until he's 18 and he can go to college and put posters of nekkid women on his walls instead.

My dad's contribution as a parent the entire time I grew up was watching TV and otherwise completely ignoring me, unless he wanted me to mow the lawn. I'll take the overcompensating any day. But my guess is you're wrong. My guess is this is a dad who 1) loves to work on home projects and 2) loves to make his kid happy.

A kid will outgrow anything and everything. So maybe their first toy should be a college textbook?

None of this means that dads who don't build elaborate bedrooms are bad fathers. Good fathers spend time with their kids, and pay attention to them. Pirate bedroom fun but not required. A good father will actually *play* pirates with his kids. I bet this guy does.

I think a better idea is a cool treehouse or clubhouse in the back yard. That way the kid can do what he wants with it and it can change with him up until he turns it into a pot smoking room/ jizznasium.

Not particularly, no. That room just seems indulgent, pointless and impractical. A kid needs enough room to sleep study and keep his/her things anything else in moronic. Do you think that kid is going to keep that room clean? A kid needs a manageable space hey can take care of and learn responsibility having a space like that for a kid to manage is nearly cruel which takes me back to my original point. That room is probably being cleaned by someone else which teaches nothing and again indulges the kid.

Way to pick one sentence and take it out of context just so you can make an idiotic statement. A kid doesn't need their own personal Chuck E Cheese in their bedroom. A manageable space that they can take care of and should be expected to care of is all they need. That is why there is a thing called outside where you can pick up a stick and play pirate all you want. I have already raised 2 kids and plan on starting a family with the future Mrs. titwrench in the next couple years and I can promise you our house isn't going to be turned into a god damned Dave and Busters.

Shocking news. Being rich can make dreams come true.

I'm far more impressed by the guy that spends time with his kid and builds a treehouse for them out of scrap, than the guy that pays to have an expensive pirate themed installation put in his kids bedroom.

If this kid doesn't grow into one of those teens that's pissed they got the blue BMW for their 16th birthday instead of the black one they really wanted it'll be a damned miracle.

Better hope they cut the holes to metric code or they'll get fined when the Department of Works can't use a standard size plug to fill them.

Per the article the guy designed and built it himself after talking to the kid about what he wants.

Considering how many teenage girls would listen to a whine of "I love my parents, but it can be frustrating. They tried so hard to give me a cool bedroom when I was a little kid, and it was awesome, but I feel like I'm outgrowing it and can't think of how to tell them, or even how to update it so it doesn't feel so childish. You're a great artist, could you maybe come over and take a look at it? I bet you'd know a way to make it look good without hurting my Dad's feelings," and immediately think 'sensitive, likes me, omg a pirate ship!' I think that kid's going to be up to his neck in Keira Knightley-cosplayer tail before he's eighteen.

I've been a sixteen-year-old girl, and I can reasonably say that I'd bang a guy not only with, but IN a pirate room. Hell, I once pounced a guy who still had a race-car bed his dad had made for him at age six and didn't want to hurt his folks' feelings by asking for something more mature at age twenty-three. (To be fair, it was a damn cool race-car bed, disassembled easily and is presently in the storage-space until husband and I have a kid...because yeah, once you've shagged a dude in a DeLorean race-car bed, you might as well marry him. It will never get kinkier.)

That, or the kid in TFA might have a younger sibling who gets the pirate room in a few years.
