I know he's not making a documentary or a 'period piece' per se, but there are elements of time spent on authenticity, and then you just throw all of that out the window with a Jim Croce song.

Low budget westerns of the 60s and 70s didn't spend much time on accuracy. Several, including Django, used dynamite at a time when dynamite hadn't been invented yet. And there's always the inevitable 15 shots fired from a Colt revolver without the hero ever reloading.

Others, most notably Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, used modern music throughout. Hell, that movie's score was almost entirely Bob Dylan songs.

Given that Django was a modern take on that kind of genre picture, I wasn't nearly as bothered by those things as you were.

Most historically accurate Western I ever saw was Heaven's Gate, and that was a pretentious, overlong, self-indulgent pile of donkey shiat.
