Why would they do this?

At least now they have the "memories" of being famous. That's all about to be erased when only 17 people show up for their "reunion" concert.

The sad thing is most of their lyrics will have to explain how they're not silly little kids anymore. And then they'll realize that they're getting back together as the same group they were as silly little kids and they'll feel sad.
