That is sad. My mum has Alzheimer's. It's a horrible, long drawn out loss. It's awful.

Allow me to quote from the official NYT style guide, widely followed across the media:

14.6: Celebrities down to the C list are required to "battle" any debilitating, progressive disease. D- and E-list celebrities, members of the general public with human-interest back stories, and people who have appeared on "reality" TV shows are only required to "battle" cancer. There is a special exemption for child stars whose reputation remains unsullied in adulthood: they are considered Honorary Life B-listers (c.f. Annette Funicello).
