It would have been better if he had built 300 meeting places for anarchists, freethinkers, and the like to smoke pot, have promiscuous sex, and otherwise live free from Communist totalitarianism. IMHO, Catholicism is just as oppressive as any Communist government--just compare life under a Medici Pope to life under Josef Stalin. Communist fanatics are just as dangerous as Catholic fanatics--different belief systems, same personality disorder...

jamerai: I'm getting ready for u to say that since its filmed its obviously a hoax. If u do that I'm walking away from this trolling thread.

Ok, enough is enough. It is 'you' not 'u.' There is no justification for that abortion. It is clear you have a minimal grasp of English grammar, since you properly used contractions. There is only two more letters to press to make a more cogent argument without your reader(s) assuming you are an illiterate twit vapidly spouting dogmatic tripe. Please consider this a polite request and gentle criticism.

//polishes off the GN badge
//Seriously, enough with the usage of 'u' and 'Ur.' Ur is located in the modern state of Iraq. It is not an abbreviation or contraction of 'you are.'

Communism is the ideal all atheists and anarchists aspire to.

/totalitarianism is how it always ends up
//revising history to pretend atheism is unrelated to communism is what wannabe totalitarians do when gearing up to start another revolution

Hey atheists, show a little respect for the padre who required the pearly gates to be renovated. (awesome headline!) . He faced some tough opposition and long odds to provide for what his neighbors thought they desperately needed. Whether they did really need it was totally besides the point. They sincerely believed they needed their churches to offer them hope, false or not, of something better while living in very difficult times. Don't forget that it was  places like these where people gathered and helped the warsaw pact countries overcome their particular brand of severe oppression.

Why do people keep judging past events and beliefs by current moral standards and knowledge; it just doesn't work that way very well. They did the best they could with what they knew at the time.

Pet peeve: Atheists that are just as pushy and opinionated as any bible thumper. We may not need a god, but we do need to be understanding.

david_gaithersburg: Drew,

You can't go a single day without a hate speech thread. Stay classy.

But whose speech is hateful to whom?

I personally despise the idea of "hate speech". There is nothing wrong with hate. It can be useful and justified. Nor is there something wrong with speaking that hate. True freedom of speech should ideally protect one's right to say anything, positive or negative.

Should we give up that right, we take another step closer to the government legally oppressing those who speak against it.

That's the real "red scare" you should fear.

I generally hew strongly to Kipling's view on the clergy ("Be polite, but not friendly, with bishops. Be kind to all poor parish priests."), but I'll give a tip of my hat to this man for his defiance of communism. Whether or not you agree with his theology, he used his notoriety (from the government's point of view) as a tool to stand up for what he believed in- in the face of a fairly despotic government.

Requiesce in pace, padre.
