pdrake: thanks, i made it yesterday.

It's awesome. I'm kind of obsessed with ikea monkey now - "I was Supposed to Pick Up Carl" is my background image currently but I may just switch to yours.

shortymac: Oznog: I saw the CNN interview with the sanctuary lady.

She seemed alarmingly grandiose and triumphantly smug about it. "GONE are the human clothes... and we've got him (in a cage) just being a monkey with other monkeys now".

Weird lady quote: "I know he cannot live without me," said real estate agent Yasmin Nakhuda. "And everyone who knows Darwin can vouch for this. He needs his mother like a child needs his mother."

Aww fark it all, I hate everyone in this story, but the money's awesome.

That Monkey is cute now because it's a baby, when it hit puberty it'll be an angry, unruly, face and genital attacking, poo-flinging wild animal.

If you want a pet, get a cat or dog for god's sake. They have been domesticated for centuries and they want human companionship.

Remember Michael Jackson and "Bubbles The Chimp"?

When Bubbles matured, he was an aggressive adult, NOT a pet, and even Jackson couldn't take care of him. Turned him over to an animal sanctuary. Wikipedia alleged Bubbles attempted suicide in the sanctuary. Getting rid of Bubbles was done really quietly, the truth didn't come out until much later- the molestation trials AFAIK.

Well he was either bought from a breeder who sells chimps for medical research, or he may have rescued it from a place that did cancer research (unlikely). Either way, Bubbles was never destined for a fulfilling lot in life, just the way it is.
Actually it seems like many wild animals are dandy pets before maturing into adults. I know someone who had a raccoon, great until it matured. In fact one note made awhile back was that dogs seem to carry some physical as well as behavioral features associated with immature animals after they've matured. The significant theory is that perhaps "domesticating" was primarily just finding a defect which turns off significant elements of the maturation process.

Monkeys are horrible pets and I can't imagine why someone would want one. They're smart plus they have an undying need to take apart and examine every object in their environment that they encounter. This combined with their high energy and flexible, articulate little hands equals one hell of a destructive animal.

Then there's the whole ripping-off-bodily-appendages thing. Sure it was a chimp originally, but monkey see, monkey do.

She'll probably be calling the sanctuary to take him when he grows up into a wild adult.

It's a Lazer Beam: Why does the sight of this little guy make my biological clock tick and babies don't?

Maybe you've got extra Neanderthal genes?

Is "I was supposed to pick up carl" from a movie or something?

Not that I am aware of. Just another part of the memedom, by mashing two together.
