The guys in the wing suits in Transformers: Dark of the Moon were real, and not just CGI?

What on earth for? More than ninetyfive percent of the shots in that movie included shiatty CGI that looked like washed-out, blurry graphics from an old Nintendo. Why did they bother to make that stupid throwaway scene that had nothing at all to do with the plot* (and looked like CGI anyhow) into a real shot?

* disclaimer: nothing in that movie had anything to do with the plot. The entire movie was made of mix-and-match scenes designed to be edited together for different markets for maximum commercial success. Literally any scene could have been removed from that movie, and a complete movie would have remained.
** double disclaimer: even my slightly slow eleven year old nephew got bored during that movie.
