Because when you are looking for a way to screw over The Fed's fascist fiat currency, the first thing that comes to mind is a currency without any physical backing that can have it's supply manipulated with complete anonymity.

/even gold-backed would be better, and that's a low bar for currency foundations

I don't buy this Mayan thing at all. If they were so smart, they'd still be around, and were are they?

Very much this. I stopped believing calender based end of the world predictions after my 4th school agenda.

That's what I was thinking. Wasn't bitcoin made in some internetty idealistic way to get away from governmental and bank control of currency? Now it seems they've been absorbed by the banks.
