My Hobbit paperback is missing and my LotR books are starting to look pretty ratty. I might have to grab this new printing for X-Mas as it looks a lot better than my early 90's ones with the paintings of "Obese Jew-Fro Bilbo", "Surprise Buttsecks Legolas", and "Math Teacher Aragorn."

Is it just me, or does everyone else hate books with movie-actor's faces on them?

The first time I read Fight Club it had Brad Pitt on it, and the whole time I was imagining Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden and it really couldn't get it out of my head. I want to imagine and read the characters the authors wrote, not the actors portraying them.

Plus it looks cheap and "Hey, I liked the movie so much that I bought the book."

Still have my Silver Jubilee set, though they're a lot more battered than these ones. I think they're a striking design, and the Darrell K. Sweet illustrations are pretty nice, even though the early Hildebrandt paintings are better.

B: now *THIS* is how folks need to merchandise things. Great product display, esp the mini football to be the eye of Sauron ( spoiler alert ) Sauron was not yet just an eye in the Hobbit.
C: It is too tall, and that is my only complaint.Sure, you have no product in the back, but maintaining that display is going to be a nightmare, and the gods help a young kids or drunkeded person that hits it- congrats! about half are no longer in pristine condition.

Sauron wasn't just an eye, period:

In the books, the eye is generally metaphorical, although it verges on being taken literally in Frodo's visions or sometimes as shorthand for Sauron and the power of Mordor. The movies just chose to make him literally an eye, presumably to give a shapeless arch-villain something to look like on film.

I'm actually re-reading my copy of The Hobbit (same cover you showed) that I bought back in 8th grade. For so long, that chubby bastard was my image of Bilbo Baggins. Now I'm trying to picture Martin Freeman, but it's hard.

Why should Aragorn have to chose between Arwen and Eowyn? I do approve of his choice, but he DID help save the day AND he became king. I think at least ONE threesome would be in order.

/I'm sure there's at least one fanfic out there that covers this

Thank you. Interesting note: one of the most central aspects of LOTR didn't even exist yet when Tolkien wrote the Hobbit. in the original, Gollum simply allows Bilbo to walk away with the ring, like "oh well, I got bested and lost my ring, oh darn." After writing LOTR, Tolkien had to go back and re-write that scene so that Gollum was angry and demented after losing the ring because of the power it possessed over its bearer.

I've got the same LoTR set (jewfro Bilbo, surprise Legolas, math Aragorn) in all black.

I've got a off-white and grey/purple Hobbit, thin paperback.

I've got the gold Silmarillion that matches the above mentioned black set.

I *just* picked up a middle-quality first printing Silmarillion, with a fold-out map inside.

I must say that I loved your description of the artwork of the paperbacks. I think my brother may still have that set. I picked up the Harper Collins editions when the movies came out in the early 2000s because I liked the black covers and needed some paperbacks to abuse while keeping my hardcover in near pristine condition (only once read).
Here's a reference to that set.
