I create a duplicate layer each time when applying a new color, Paint Bucket in Color mode, splash on color, mask it and paint brush in the areas where color is to be exposed.
Tinker with the layer mode (particularly Soft Light) and opacity before flattening image. I believe I went over the grassy area with 15 colors.

/ At least that's the technique I use....
