I_Love_Cheesecake: Great moment, but that's not even the funniest episode of WKRP.

You are of course thinking of the dangers of alcohol episode where Dr. Johnny Fever's reflexes and reaction time improved with alcohol.

It took about one week working at my first real radio station to realize that WKRP was pretty much a documentary.

Love that episode..But that whole series was just magic..Beside the drinking episode,
A couple of my favorites are;

"The Contest Nobody Could Win" where they make that crazy mix of snippets of songs
they think is impossible for anyone to get,and someone actually gets it!

"A Commercial Break" Where they make the commercial for the funeral home chain
and finally decide not to play it because it's..well..morbid and doesn't fit the station..

Bill_Wick's_Friend: thespindrifter: In a lot of cases, music gets misappropriated for the episode, and paid for later; rights are not negotiated at all in those cases, because they figured it was better to ask forgiveness than permission, which doesn't translate well into the after-market releases :(

I don't know what TV shows you've done music clearances for, but their business and legal affairs department and their E&O Insurers must be asleep at the switch.

Been in this biz for 15 years and I've never ever EVER heard anyone say "let's just infringe on the copyright and if/when they sue us we'll work out a deal". Doesn't happen. Can't happen. There's too many checks and balances along the way (E&O, cue sheet delivery, broadcaster's standards & practices dept) to allow that to happen.

I think it is more of the case of music licensing being quite a bit different for broadcast TV back then. From my understanding, back then broadcasters could get blanket licenses similar to what radio station would have that allowed them to use whatever music they wanted for a flat fee. Since the television broadcast was going out via the airwaves, there were no licensing issues. Those licenses didn't apply to home video sales because the even video tapes were just getting started then, so we wound up with the current licensing issue.

You lie!

The funniest episode of WKRP is "A Fish Tale" - where Dr. Johnny Fever's motor skills get BETTER the more he drinks during an anti-drunk-driving campaign. Could you imagine the outrage if something that like ran today?

I really wish they'd release the entire series on DVD uncut, but like Cold Case, all that music isn't gonna make it possible.
