I don't think so....She didn't even have a point other than to shiat on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

I visited there once. There are certain places and situations where you should shut up and show some respect and that is one of them. Some poor bastard went to war and died in the service of his country. It's something that every soldier in our military might be asked to do at some point.

You can complain all you want about our foreign policy and how we've fought unjust wars but the grunt on the ground is the one who didn't make those decisions and he (or she) is there doing his (or her) best and often sacrificing their life.

Do you know anyone who has ever died? A parent? A grandparent? A friend? Maybe you should go visit their grave and then visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington. And think about something besides lolcats.

And then think about how you might feel about this girl shiatting on your grandmother's grave.

My father was in Vietnam when I was born, and he spent 25 years in the military raising a family of five boys and a wife on a serviceman's salary.

He's dead now, but he would have had a good chuckle over that photo.

What exactly did I say in that post that was either "dumb" or being an "asshole"?

Aren't you the proud drunk driver?

Yeah - I'm proud to say I can drive with a 0.05 BAC and not kill anyone or cause any accidents, unlike many sober people.

Are you one of those people who thinks the legal limit should be 0.0 BAC? Are you one of those people who thinks drivers should be allowed to run red lights and change lanes without looking so long as they haven't had a drop to drink?

You said something about military worship. I said there are certain places for respect and I believed Arlington is one of those places..

Then you brought up drunk driving - which has nothing to do with anything in this thread and then you continued on with personal attacks (calling me a "stupid asshole" among other things).

So which of us is bringing up shiat that has nothing to do with the subject of this thread?

The reactions to the picture were another example of the out-of-control military worship in this country, just like your moronic response was another example of how f*cking clueless you are.

Can you explain to the class how anything I said was "moronic" or "dumb" or "f*cking clueless"?

So you have a problem with the military. I get that. But I would point out again that the average GI or even most officers have nothing to do with foreign policy or which wars they are ordered to fight in.

Most Americans never go to Arlington. That's cool with me. This girl did go to Arlington and she let the world know that she was giving a big "f*ck you" to everyone who ever served in the military.

I'm not sure how to explain it. Why did I get a very weird creepy feeling when I drove past Dachau in Germany? I'm not even Jewish. Dachau and Arlington are not the same thing by any stretch of the imagination but like I said earlier there are some places where you should just shut up and show some respect.

The reason I didn't stop and visit Dachau was because I didn't want to think about it. I just wanted to get away from it, but imagine if you will the outrage that would have happened if this coont had visited Dachau and done the same thing. At the same time, let's put the outrage in perspective. This isn't making national headlines. It's not news, it's Fark.

What if she had done the same to a national symbol of another country? Wiped her ass with the Union Jack while standing in front of Buckingham Palace? Some people might have a problem with that.

Maybe it's not quite as bad as holding a punk rock prayer in the most important church in the nation which is probably why she's not being sent to a gulag, but she deserves every ounce of ridicule and loathing that she is getting.

It might have been different if she had a point, but she wasn't protesting US foreign policy - she just wanted to take a shiat on a grave that is very a revered and solemn place in the US. .

Also, this.

She would've done the same thing had she seen the same sign in a library and no one would've blinked an eye. She wasn't "defiling" anything. She was using a sign as a prop.

2012-11-20 9:58:17 AM
Meh, it's not like she is doing anything really offensive like shiatting on the sign or something, taking a 2 second picture where you're fake screaming with your middle finger up where you shouldn't be is just like so crazy you guys. I'm more disturbed by the fact she seems to think she is being truly edgy and really defying authority. She strikes me as someone who is incredibly vapid and wouldn't want to stand up to actual authority lest they pepper spray her and beat her with billy clubs.

It is awfully hard to imagine being in the vicinity of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and somehow also feeling in a joking mood. It's a pretty moving place. Her ability to do that, and talk about it, is exactly what all those guys died for.
So it's a really powerful confirmation that they gave their lives for something.

Silencing her, or telling her she shouldn't have done that, is the same thing as telling all those soldiers that they died for nothing. That their lives were a waste.

I don't think that would be very nice.

jesus christ. I just clicked through the links in TFA that link to her employer's facebook page and the people there are just screaming, demanding an apology from this chick's employer and it got me thinking:

WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

Seriously. This was a stupid kid making a stupid mistake like stupid kids tend to do and yet the internet is bound and determined to ruin the lives and livelihoods of everyone even remotely connected to this girl.

It's not like she killed anyone. It's not like she stole anything or committed a hate crime or any crime for that matter. She just took a stupid goofy picture and put it on her facebook page. I have profound respect for the military, especially those that gave their lives, but it's not like she was defacing tombstones or urinating on graves.

To those of you who are posting on her boss's page and commenting publicly about this: who do you think you are that you're entitled to harass her employers who had nothing to do with it and generally fark up this girl forever? It must be nice to have never done anything immature before. You're just being judgmental dicks.

2012-11-20 10:22:37 AM
I don't know why this is bothering me so much, but it is.

Question for all the people vilifying this woman: Do you GENUINELY think that her intent with this picture is to give a big "FARK YOU!" to all the military and the people who died for this country? Like, she went to Arlington, suddenly realized how much she hates dead soldiers, then said to her husband "Get a pic of me one finger saluting these dead arseholes. Hey, then I'll post it to Facebook so the world can see how much I hate them!"

Or did she say:

"Haha, look at the sign. Take a picture of me being ironic."

Now carefully apply Occam's razor.

She is an idiot, but it isn't like the majority of our country really has all this mad respect for soldiers anyways. It's all lip service and manipulation by those controlling them.

The same people who still view the Iraq war as justified are the first people who will throw a hissy fit over fast and furious. Meanwhile I was told I hated the troops because I didn't want our country to start wars and nation-building operations and now I get told things like I don't value lives because I don't see F&F as the greatest issue of them all.

vermicious k'nid: I don't know why this is bothering me so much, but it is.

It might have been different if she had a point, but she wasn't protesting US foreign policy - she just wanted to take a shiat on a grave that is very a revered and solemn place in the US. .

When I visited Dachau (in 2001), I walked in and just had a sense that it was a place to be quiet. No one said anything about it, there were no signs requesting silence, it was just a feeling that the entire group of us had. Then we saw a man filming his son pretending to choke to death in the gas chambers. I never truly wept for humanity untiil that moment.

If it was false commentary and you could prove that it damaged her reputation and thus her economics, maybe, but that's tough to prove for someone whose isn't widely known. If she made her living in the spotlight, there is nowhere she could go to do her job in that profession. If she was a secretary, she'll find another job.

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

And the sign said anybody caught trespassin' would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and-a yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you theright?"
"To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in"
"If God was here he'd tell you to your face, Man, you're some kinda sinner"

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

And the sign said, "Everybody welcome. Come in, kneel down and pray"
But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all, I didn't have a penny to pay
So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign
I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine."
Wooo!

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign
Blockin' out the scenery, breakin' my mind
Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

I don't think that would be very nice.

So which of us is bringing up shiat that has nothing to do with the subject of this thread?

The reactions to the picture were another example of the out-of-control military worship in this country, just like your moronic response was another example of how f*cking clueless you are.

There's a huge difference between military worship and respect for fallen soldiers. These people gave their lives for the country, were shot at for the country, went into warzones for the country. You can criticize our military leadership, our wars and our foreign policy and still respect the sacrifice of our soldiers, most of whom come from our most disadvantaged communities and families.

You are very much the clueless one here.

And you'd also think that companies that make clothes irons don't need to put the warning "Do not iron while wearing shirt" but:

The simple fact is, someone at some point was loud and showing disrespect, thus requiring the sign. Did they want to have to put up such an obvious sign? No, but obviously some people are, and always will be, douchebags.

Happy Hours: kxs401: It was a stupid thing to do, but goddamn has the military worship in this country gotten out of control.

You...kind of just made the other dude's point. Admittedly, s\he wrecked it by calling you names, but his point was this: If that chick wants to be an idiot there, a healthy reaction would be if everyone shrugged and said "wow, what a moron".

But your reaction, a reaction a lot of other people had, was to link it emotionally to yourself and take the insulting of a soldier personally because (I presume from what you're saying) either you have a relative who's a soldier or highly empathize with those who do.

And if it was just one or two people, well, okay. But it's almost half the people who discuss this issue at any given time. More if you're on a right-slanted site. That's not healthy for our society, because it means we're idolizing young men who don't have the maturity to handle that. And even if all it did was give them swelled egos, historically that's exactly the conditions that lead to major war crimes, because young men are taught to hero-worship soldiers, try to become the hero, and discover how shiatty it really is.

/There's a difference between honestly saying 'we applaud you for doing a needed job' and hero-worship. America as a whole has crossed the line into hero-worship, and historically, that's never ended well.

No. I believe she's deleting everything because she and her coworker (or boss) didn't get the response she thought they would get by putting that up.

My opinion is that if you're going to claim to be edgy and always sticking it to the man, nut up and stick with it. Be proud of your douchery... what tvtropes calls the 'refuge in audacity'. Others may still hate your guts, but at least you actually are being consistent and have a personal point to make.

Doing something retarded and then deleting everything but also refusing to make an apology....... that blows my mind. The only reason to delete anything is to say I'm sorry. Deleting everything but then turning around and saying the equivalent 'why can't you take a joke? why are you confronting me?' ... that's cowardly. That's not sticking it to anyone. There's no honor in that.

Nothing was learned, on Ms. Stone's end.

If she's going to stick to her guns about this, she needs to do it right and NOT delete everything. That's all.

The point of the Fire Lindsay Stone facebook page is that she was on company time on a company trip with clients (residents) of the non-profit she works for. She wasn't doing this while on vacation, on her own time.

She was on paid company time when she did this.
She did it while she was supposed to representing the non-profit.
She did it while independent living residents were under her indirect care (again, if she really is a money manager instead of a case worker or nurse, I don't know how that works with non-profits and independent living centers, what her duties would be while chaperoning indepedent living residents on a field trip).
Her actions, while she's on the company dime, represent the company for better or worse.

Again, that page -- whether you agree with it or not -- was not set up just because they were angry at the photo. They were also angry that it was taken when it was taken. By doing this on the non-profit's dime, Ms. Stone made this an issue for the non-profit.

This could affect funding for the non-profit. It may or may not have, if she was doing this on her own time. It's more likely to, however, if she does it while representing the non-profit.

She has not issued an apology yet.

The non-profit is scrambling and doesn't really know how to handle this, since it's gone national and veterans are pissed.

Should it?

I did not know all this but really, because she offended people she should be fired? I get that it was wrong, I dont even agree with her idea that this was supposed to be funny. What I am saying is that it's not as wrong as the rage to have her pay for her mistake to appease the masses when that place stands for our freedoms.

Your Obama-care point, well it's off point in the fact that no matter which side of the fence you are on it actually affects others involved directly.

This, only makes people fake rile up cause they have nothing better to do but be upset... oh the outrage...

She has every right to do this, and I have every right to call her a stupid c*nt for doing so. Talk about acting like a 13 year-old.

I don't think her employer should necessarily fire her though, if she wasn't on the clock and representing them at the time.

My two cents: LIFE should have said they deplore the incident but also respect their employee's constitutional right to free expression. As said behavior did not happen on company time or associated with the company, they should actually stand up for the principles those soldiers fought and died for and let her be.

ExperianScaresCthulhu:

Off topic: Washington and Lee were both slave owners on Indian land, therefore any discussion of which white man stole from which other white man is a little more moot.

Actually, the history is a tad more complicated. The United States took over territory from the British. At the time of the Declaration of Independence, it was about a decade after the French-Indian wars, in which the Native Americans allied with France to make war on the British settlers.

Frankly, at that point in time, I would have had a "fark you" attitude towards the natives as well.

The idea that the white man "stole" the land from the natives is also pretty silly. Since the natives did not have a legal concept of ownership of the land, then you cannot steal it - theft is an unlawful taking. No law, no unlawful taking.

If you're rather parse the morality, you can go back to King Philip's war (or even a generation farther back than that) to see that the natives and the British immigrants were both quite willing to be dicks to one another, so spare me the narrative that paints the settlers as the root of all evil and the natives as merely victims. It isn't remotely that black and white.

Why is that even a question? Because of her actions, the non-profit organization at which she works is now forever (as far as the Internet goes) linked to "that bird-flipping moron at Arlington." Every time someone searches for Living Independently Forever, Inc., her stupid stunt is going to come up.

It's probably a moot point. The two of them have been placed on unpaid leave, and I think the non-profit is hoping it'll blow over. If & when it doesn't, I'm betting at least one of them (the moron featured in the picture) will be fired.

So which of us is bringing up shiat that has nothing to do with the subject of this thread?

I'll cop to being way b*tchier than I should have, but I do stand by my point. What she did was disrespectful and not nearly as funny or edgy as she thought it was, but the level of outrage because she happened to do it in Arlington is emblematic of a larger problem in America today. When every person at all associated with the military is an OMGHERO! it cheapens actual heroic actions.

For the record, my dad retired when I was 16 after 20 years as a Naval officer. During my life as a public school student, we moved every year or two and I attended 12 different public school. I have a healthy level of respect for the military.

I'm a clergyman, and I'm not offended by the YMCA picture. They are not standing in the Sistine chapel doing it.

I'm a veteran, and I'm deeply offended by what Ms. Stone did. Actions have consequences, and symbols and gestures have meaning - even if the actor is too ignorant or immature to recognize them. No matter how she feels about our foreign policy or the military, it is the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform that made it possible for her to lead the kind of privileged, entitled life that turned her into a spoiled, arrogant, self-professed "douchebag." Ms. Stone's behavior shows that she is a callow, ill-bred, selfish child without any of the character or integrity of the servicemembers whom she so thoughtlessly insulted. She represents the very worst of her generation. The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines represent the very best.

Hey, if some job creator chooses to laugh in her face and wipe his ass with her application, he's just expressing himself. It's ironic humor. He's exercising at will employment freedoms. That's something this self professed douchebag would certainly applaud and find great amusement in.

impaler: mod3072: It's not "military worship" to show a little goddamn respect once in a while. Don't respect the military? That's fine. At least have a little consideration for the grieving widow/orphaned child who is there to visit the last resting place of someone they love. That doesn't require worship of any sort, just a little common human decency.

My version of the photo must be cropped. Can I see the full photo that has the widow and orphaned children in it?

Any time Arlington National Cemetery is open there is a child without their mother or father, a husband without a wife, a mother without a child within shouting distance; with the exception of tours, that is why people go there.

The problem most people are having is not with her taking a picture; it is what she appears to be doing. She appears to be screaming at the top of her lungs and waiving around a rude gesture. I would say that she is no better than Fred Phelps, but at least he and his ilk keep their bullshiat outside the cemetery. We, as a society, over the course of thousands of years, have decided that cemeteries are places for quiet grief and introspection. The ability of a person to visit their dead and grieve or cope without disturbance is something that our society holds sacrosanct.

What is truly offensive about the whole thing is that she has the nerve to claim she meant no disrespect when photographic evidence clearly illustrates that she did mean disrespect. The disrespectful gesture toward the sign that requests respect is pretty damning evidence.

That said, I would defend to the death her right to say and do the dumb thing she did. She does not deserve threats against her or her possessions, nor does her employer deserve the crap they are having to deal with because of this. However, her right to say stupid shiat does not exempt her from hearing with the voices of those who find her lack of respect offensive (assuming that they do not violate her rights).

/The Tomb of the Unknowns is on a hill overlooking nearly everything else without many trees or other breaks between. Someone shouting at the Tomb could easily be heard within the Columbarium, hundreds of yards away.

ExperianScaresCthulhu: protectyourlimbs: ExperianScaresCthulhu: the_geek: People have become addicted to drama.

yeah. but then, I, for one, have never claimed to be drama-free (because I've found the folks who make that claim tend to be mired in drama the deepest)... anyway

according to Fire Lindsay Stone posts
- she works at a non-profit treating independent living residents
- it was a company trip that this was done on
- there were independent living residents along as the picture was taken
- the person who took the picture was either her co-worker or her boss

A person asked why a case/money manager (which Lindsay is/was), was doing on a trip with independent living residents in the first place. That's normal, though, right?

Who usually goes on field trips out of state with independent living residents?

A lot of persons who served in the armed forces are the ones taking up arms against the photo and contacting the non-profit, it's not Anonymous or 4Chan or some radio morning zoo crew or other jokers.

Since folks who served are insulted, what would be the appropriate response of LIFE Cape Cod, since 'it's just a joke chill out' is not going to be accepted?

America is a free country and we do not control the lives of our employees outside of our company, Unfortunately what she did is a horrible lapse in judgement and we in no way agree with this in anyway matter or form, we will do our best to help her understand the sensitivity of this issue and how her actions reflect badly on us as a whole, but to fire her would do more damage to what that tomb stands for than a picture could ever do.

The point of the Fire Lindsay Stone facebook page is that she was on company time on a company trip with clients (residents) of the non-profit she works for. She wasn't doing this while on vacation, on her own time.

OK folks...here's the deal. I plan to take this page down some time Friday afternoon. By then everyone should have had plenty of time to discover this page and say their piece. I strongly disapprove of what Lindsay and her coworker did. She lost her job over this, and I think that was a wise move on the part of her employer. However, moving forward, as difficult as it may be, I ask that you try to find it in your hearts to forgive her. If you harbor hatred towards anyone over anything it will eat you up on the inside. Get your frustrations out if you must and then ask God to forgive her. Perhaps this experience will in the long run be a positive one for her and change her life for the better. Hopefully she will have a new-found respect for those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
