Because People in power are Stupid: Coming next: Hobbit themed sex toys... the Dildo Daggins as it were.
Tommy Moo: Did Tolkien actually invent the race of Hobbit?
Tommy Moo: Did Tolkien actually invent the race of Hobbit? I know there have been "elves" going all the way back to Germanic mythos with the Kobold lore, and I presume dwarves are likewise public domain. I remember being able to choose "hobbit" as a race in the old Wizardry games, so I always figured they were likewise part of public lore.
Practical_Draconian: Well, it's a slot machine that won't give old people the heart attacksheebie-jeebies like the Aliens slots.
Jizz Master Zero: FTA: Not only are gambling services outside the rights granted, but this exploitation of Tolkien's well-loved work has offended and distressed Tolkien's devoted fans,Oh, for fark's sake. Then "Tolkien's devoted fans" are raging pussies that need to get a life.
SkunkWerks: When I'd initially heard about the LOTR films years before they were out, I think my first reaction was shock that Jackson managed to convince the Tolkien Estate to give it a go at all.
mhd: I think they never did.
mhd: Didn't Tolkien himself sell the film rights ages ago
mhd: It's been a while, but I remember Christopher Tolkien basically disinheriting one of his sons because he contributed to the movies.
Carth: The Name of Wind movie
mhd: Carth: The Name of Wind movieWhenever Robert Pattinson has free capacities.
Carth: mhd: Carth: The Name of Wind movieWhenever Robert Pattinson has free capacities.Only if we can get Kristen Stewart as Denna. Those two have real chemistry ya know?
randroid: So, I assume everybody saw the latest trailer, right? The one that played in the previews before Skyfall? Was that one of those "CGI unfinished" trailers? The dwarves looked terrible. Especially the really fat one. What was up with that?!
Archie Goodwin: The other day I saw a Tolkien Craps table. I could tell because it a had a You Shall Not Pass Line.
lectos: All she has to do is fark the director and she is in.
realmolo: Is this a good thread to mention how much "The Lord of the Rings" sucks? And how Tolkien was an awful writer?
SacriliciousBeerSwiller: Why the fark do 2 or 3 of the Hobbits DWARVES in this upcoming film look like they were taken somewhat seriously, and the rest look like creepy Disney abortions? It's like they had two makeup artists going with completely different visions. I am looking forward to the films, but Peter Jackson dropped the ball there.
SkunkWerks: Tommy Moo: Did Tolkien actually invent the race of Hobbit? No more than he "invented" elves, dwarves, etc. Tolkien drew a lot on myth. If you read The Hobbit, in particular, you find a lot of familiar aspects in Hobbits as you might in Brownies, or other "little people".You might say he re-invented a lot of those things. But then I tend to believe creativity isn't necessarily about creating absolutely brand new things. You're always re-treading ground to some extent- drawing on what's come before.Everything is a remix.
HindiDiscoMonster: Tolkien was the first to create such a world and story. He is the grandfather of the fantasy literary genre. Other "fantasy" work like Arthur and such were considered folklore. In the Germanic example, those were considered folklore.
mhd: realmolo: Is this a good thread to mention how much "The Lord of the Rings" sucks? And how Tolkien was an awful writer? You're not the only one:"I know that this may not be a popular opinion amongst Tolkein grognards, but the fact is that the D&D Movie was a superior piece of filmcraft inalmost every regard. I think the future will bear me out on this one.Consider -- Tolkein's work itself was never written for the masses. Thescript of the D&D Movie is masterfully written to be accessible to allwalks of humanity. Meanwhile, Tolkein's story is reserved for the ivorytowers of an arrogant minority of English teachers and Anglophiles."
SkunkWerks: And then there was a sticky issue with movie rights to the Hobbit, which technically belonged to Warner Brothers (via the Ralph Bakshi animated adaptations of the late 70's and early 80's)
