revrendjim: I think this is one of the border patrol checkpoints they set up a few miles north of the border in places like AZ or CA. If so, he would have gotten through quicker if he just said "yes" when asked if he was a US citizen. Of course that only works if you don't look Mexican or answer with a Spanish accent.

Sounded like a Washington/British Columbia checkpoint to me. In which case, yes - people in Washington REALLY are not used to that religious nutbag bullshiat and it's very uncomfortable for them.

That said, he's lucky I wasn't his border guard. Anyone trying to distract me like that, especially with the idea that religious people are less likely to do Bad Things, would make me immediately suspect. I'd probably have had him step out of the car and stay silent, and ordered a full search of the vehicle because of his suspicious behavior.
