Am I the only one that thinks off duty conduct for something that does not violate any law should be a non issue at work? Is what he did gross? Absolutely. Is it something he should be punished for at work? Not in my opinion.

What is the video was someone secretly capturing him kissing another guy outside a nightclub? Lots of people would consider that gross too. should they punish him at work for it? Is the answer different than for the question above? Not for me it isn't.

It is no employers business what you do in your spare time as long as it is legal activity. I don't care that he is paid with public money. It is irrelevant. If we held public servants to the standards of every tax payer we would end up with no public servants. There would be no women, minorities, homosexuals, left handed people, atheists, Jews, Christians, disabled persons or men. For every identified group of people out there, there is someone out there that pays taxes that has a hate on for that group and finds their values or activities unacceptable.

I am not sure when freedom and liberty died but it has been dead for a while now.

I agree with you in principle... But the terms of employment he agreed to upon being hired had "If you royally embarrass the department in the media, to HR's discretion, we will can your ass," he's out of luck. I almost guarantee you there was such a clause.

Problem is this guy has the power to control YOUR freedom. Would you be OK if, after getting arrested by this guy, the judge at your trial also has a video of himself getting drunk and sticking his head in a bucket of piss? Or if Obama got drunk and stuck his head in a bucket of piss? I don't think I'd want anyone like that having power over me.

There may have been a clause... I will not disagree because I simply don't know. I am not being melodramatic when companies in this day and age try and strong arm your Facebook and social media Log/Pass as a condition of employment. Freedom is dead. The illusion of freedom is still alive. If they can discipline you for off duty, non illegal behavior then why can't any company that employs people demand that folks they pay vote in a certain way, or live in a certain area or...or....or... "Oh" says the employer, "you voted Republican it seems..... We are a democrat company and you broke our 500 page employment agreement. You will be suspended for two weeks without pay. I hope this does not happen again".

Feel free to substitute Republican and Democrat as you see fit the example remains the same.

Did he in any way abuse any power he may have over you? Nope. Did he do a stupid thing? yep. We have all done stupid things. Should you lose your pay because of a stupid thing that had no tangible effect on the company you work for? When I was 11 I thought burning gas in a glass pop bottle was a good idea and would be fun. It turns out glass cracks and I almost started a small forest fire.

I should have known better. But I didn't. I didn't hurt anyone or infringe on anyone's rights. Just like this guy in the video. I went away with a lesson learned and moved on. This guy should be afforded the same.

Quite possibly so. According to TFA the initial suspension was for medical purposes. Quite sensible. Although urine is sterile except in cases of bladder infection or UTI, it doesn't stay that way for long. Certainly not long enough to collect a bucketful.

The second appears to be for bringing the police into disrepute. If your work is in the public eye and relies on public trust then that is a perfectly valid reason for disciplinary action.

I agree with those saying the suspension is asinine. I think it should be every human being's right to act like a dumbass once in awhile. Now, I think if he had been dunking his head in piss on the job that would have been different.

I'd dunk my head in piss for that much money. I would hope I wouldn't get crucified by my everyone just for acting stupid..

What are you, in your twenties? It wasn't that long ago they would fire you if they found out you were gay. Or pregnant while single. Or a member of the Communist party. Getting fired for being an undisputed moron is an improvement in this country.

Because voter tampering is specifically illegal? Where you live isn't any sort of protected class that I know of, so I suppose they could do that. I mean, there are residency restrictions on many public offices, so no reason the private sector couldn't do it of they wanted; no real advantage though. "Strong arm your social media logins?" I read that story too. Don't think it's exactly common practice though and you're more than free to say "no."

Do you consider it "educational discrimination" that a law firm won't hire someone without a law degree? A hospital that won't hire a surgeon who hasn't been through medical school? How about the police having physical ability requirements (a bit softer these days it seems)? Do you want a bunch of cops who get winded after a half block because hey "they've got no business demanding I take care of my body!" Like or dislike of police aside, from their perspective, if they lose the respect of the public they cannot do their job. Being an embarrassment of this caliber is directly damaging of their purpose and no company or agency is going to willingly retain someone who is a huge risk to their operations.

As far as the republican/democrat thing? Alright. What do you think should happen to... a paid PR guy for the [party of you choice] if he got wasted and uploaded a video to youtube about why their candidate was a total jerk and how no one should vote for him? Should they have to keep him employed for some reason? Even though he's actively working against his employer in his "off duty" time?

I'm not a big fan of police but this I agree with.

TFA says "Nine other officers -- including one lieutenant and two sergeants -- also received written reprimands because they were there at the time of Croucher's dare and contributed $50 to the pot." That's what amazes me: being "not a big fan of police" it might gratify me to see a cop do that to himself -- even more than a protester doing it to him -- but I won't pay $50 for it. $50 is a lot of money on my budget: for that I could but a decent bottle of scotch.

That said, I hope he at least kept his eyes firmly shut and didn't let any get in his ears, nose or mouth: the AIDS experts advise that "water sports" if generally safe but only if it's kept external. It would suck if he got infected with something and his wife passed it on. Or haven't you read that one of the main causes of divorce among cops is from abusing their wives because they cheated back to avenge his?
