The inspiration photo is very multi-ethnic, with squirrels from four continents.

^ ^ ^ PHOTOSHOP DISCLAIMER: Possibly not historically accurate. There is ample evidence that James Dean was not behind the wheel at the time of the crash as portrayed above. Two truckers testified that (Dean) was in the passenger seat, which means that Dean's mechanic Rolf Wuetherich was actually driving at the fateful moment. A statement by Rolf at the scene backs this up.For whatever reason, authorities, and mythic history always placed Dean at the wheel at the time of his death.

Also, I used a gray squirrel to portray Turnupseed in the Ford. I vascillated between using an American Red Squirrel and a Tree Squirrel before settling on the gray squirrel as I'd always had it in my mind that he was an old fart, given his stodgy vehicle. Subsequent study revealed that he was really only 23, in fact, one year younger than Dean at the time of the crash and thus, my choice of the gray squirrel was probably ill-informed. Further study revealed that an Indian Palm Squirrel would have more closely proximated a resemblence to Turnupseed than the gray squirrel, but by that time I'd reached for the bird, the Wild Turkey. So sue me. I'm a lazy fark. But it's farking squirrels for chrissake, re-creating the death of James Dean at the intersection of Highways 41 & 46.

I have never seen a man so defeated as Yelbert at that moment. Was watching the game on the box and rooting for the Giants but alas it was not to be. He was never the same after.
