sethstorm: MayoSlather: How long until most of those jobs are lost to automation anyways?

The question isn't the job loss but the amount of time between jobs for the displaced.

Well it's both. If automation increasingly takes jobs out of an economy the effect will be lengthening the time between jobs and potentially lowering pay.

As I understand it, iPhones are only assembled in China. The components are made in a number of locations, including the US. No electronic device has all components manufactured and assembled in a single location. Those days have been gone for nearly a century.

That's bollix. All the parts are from Asia (even the box)
They are having trouble keeping up with demand though.
& don't forget. The pooter you're using right now is probably made my them too.

Manufacturing aint coming back to this country.

The REAL way to have prevented this was NOT to trade with China, but we do and will continue to do so

kg2095: Why doesn't Apple just open their own US factory like they used to have before they started exporting jobs?

An enslaved labor pool is always cheaper than a liberated one.

That, and they

JasonThomasX: Manufacturing aint coming back to this country.

Only if the US is unwilling to pursue industrial policy that ensures that all states benefit (not just the few/far RTW states) and manufacturing will return.

BgJonson79: Steigen: You know what Foxconn? We'll keep the design, support infrastructure jobs for those iThingies here and you can keep the mindless insert tab A into slot B jobs and environmental disaster for yourself.

I'm glad someone else finally realizes this!

Except that you're cutting out large amounts of the population from work and incorrectly presuming everyone is up to that task. What's wrong with both and eliminating the environmental disaster?
