Man, what's up with kids these days? When I was in high school we didn't have any of this hormonal drama, emotional savagery, or pointless speculation about other people's sexual orientations. As I recall, we treated one another with maturity and respect. Anything else would have interfered with getting our educations, which is why we were there.

entropic_existence: This sort of thing is a very real problem. Yes bullying has been around forever, but there is literally no escape now for lots of teenagers and kids. When people posting shiat on facebook about other students leads to brawls, beatings, and eventual suicide... there's a problem.

And sometimes those bullies and trolls keep shiat up even after the person dies.

There is no life or death need for a Facebook profile. There is no educational value gained from having a Facebook profile. You do not need a Facebook profile.

Teen: "I am being bullied online"

Society: "Look, high school is not everything, it gets better after you get out of high school"

Teen: "Yeah, but the bulling is happening right now, see - Judy just called me a slut on that Facebook page!" "My life is ruined!"

Society: "Well, are you a slut?"

Teen: "No, I've never even kissed a guy, let alone do anything sexual"

Society: "Well, if you cannot handle the idiots posting stupid, made up shiat about you, then walk away from Facebook, its not like you are being forced to encounter their torments. You do realize that you are willingly subjecting yourself to this torture every time you login right?"

And so it goes

If only Facebook weren't mandatory and you could opt out of it, or not even join in the first place. If only.

The thing about teens is that they don't think like normal people. Their brains are still forming, synapses are making connections and they're experiencing far more complex emotions than they have ever known. Their brains are surging with powerful chemicals. Of course they're not going to know how to deal with it or get a sense of perspective. You get a pack of them together and it's Lord of the Flies without the tropical setting. I watched Amanda Todd's video and I wish I could have told her something to make her feel better. She was just a kid.

You know there is a really easy solution to all of this. Kill the bullies. Make an example of a few of em, that will end it real quick.

/is in no way actually recommending this.

sift: I don't get why Facebook gets blamed for people being assholes. Why don't people see it what it is, people being assholes. If those girls stood on a street corner and said these things, would it be the street corners fault?

High School sucks for some people. Don't get your panties in a bunch because people make fun of you on the internet. Most people continue to get picked on because they get upset when people pick on them. If your able to say "fark them" and go about your business these people would move onto some one else.

Kind of nice for a kid that can't get laid, just start some rumors about himself and suddenly he's a stud.

Fair point, but even if they didn't other students could post offensive crap about them, regardless of whether its true or not. FB is a sh*thole.
