In our neighborhood, there were your standard 3 bed, 2 bath homes built in the early 1960s. They weren't very big houses, maybe 1100 ft/sq.

Over half of them had been turned into informal 'apartments'. Across from us was a family from India. In their house they had four families. Four. Each family had a bedroom. One was in the garage. Others just rented out every single room in the house, except the kitchen and bathrooms. Those were full of young, single people.

The infrastructure was never meant to handle that many people. The streets sure aren't--they're lined with cars, making it difficult to drive and park.

And our neighborhood wasn't anywhere near the worst for that kind of third-world overcrowding.

Well, when the 3 bedroom houses from the 1950s go for $600K, this is the kind of shiat that happens. What "standard" man, wife, and kid type of family can afford that? You see this all down the East Bay and San Jose burbs. Multiple families living in 2-4 bedroom houses because that's the only way you can afford it.
