(WTOP)   Blizzards are about to get names, just like hurricanes. Brutus -- good choice for "B". But Freyr for the "F" name? What about Fark?   ( wtop.com) divider line

Here in Canada, we've had a name for winter storms for years.

They're called WINTER. Now quit being such goddamned pussies about a little precipitation and GBTW.

I'd rather have them named after characters from Blizzard Entertainment games.

Blizzard Diablo
Blizzard Cain
Blizzard Thrall
Blizzard Kerrigan

From the list of storm names:

Q: The Broadway Express subway line in New York City.

No, it's named after the Trickster God of the Federation.

Slaxl: BitwiseShift: Freyr isn't the name embedded in Friday or Freyrs Dag?

No, that's Frigg. Though it might be Freyja, they might be the same goddess, but it's not Freyr.

Frigg is Odin's wife, goddess of the household, married women and childbirth. She is one of the Aesir variety of deity. Freyja is the goddess of love, war, beauty, human sexuality, fertility, war and death. She gets half of the fallen heroes (Einherjar) sent to her hall, Odin gets the other half sent to his (Valhalla). She is a Vanir type deity. Because of the overlap in attributes - something very common with the deities of the original Germanic tribes - she and Frigg are often confused with one another. Some have even said they are the same entity, but because they are of different tribes, I'm inclined to say they are not.

germ78: CapeFearCadaver: Freyr's a great name for a blizzard.

I'd love to be in a blizzard, just once... from NC... we're lucky if we get a sheet of ice once a year

I used to think that until about 18 months ago when we got hit with a huge blizzard in Chicago. fark that shiat. Cat 1 hurricane strength winds all night. Can't see anything but solid gray-white 100 feet in front of you. 2 feet of snow needing to be shoveled off the driveway. The snow plows only came around once before concentrating on main roads for the rest of the week. We were lucky that the power stayed on and that we had what we needed in the fridge.

/we tend to get heavy snows (20+ inches) roughly every 10-20 years, but this one was really the first one I'd call a blizzard that happened in my lifetime
//I wasn't born yet for the blizzard of '68

You mean the kind of storm that hits Kodiak several times each winter? The kind where readings tend to stop at -70F when the weather instruments are ripped off the roof?

Well if Blizzard is naming things, it should take an obscene period of time, be great, but not as great as everyone built up in their heads, then they'll redo the whole thing in patch fixes, and then release the best expansion blizzard ever, but morons won't take it seriously because god forbid it has Panda-People in it.

Geez, see why people don't fear storms? They have generic names like Luke, Sheila, John, Todd.

Call 'em with strong names: Invictus, Mike, Vinnie, Casey, Nickie. Or hell, give them titles, like World Eater, Icebringer, Firebane, Bringer of Pain and Death, Fourth Horseman.
