ciberido: Is that sufficiently broad
spamdog: ciberido: Is that sufficiently broadHeh. Broads.
ciberido: Or by "shut up" do you mean that Farkers will tell other Farkers to stop criticizing Ultra-orthodox Judaism?
Amos Quito: Porous Horace: And you wankers want them to have nukes.Someone wants Ikea to have nukes?
UncleStumpy: Much ado about nothing as far as I'm concerned, and I'm not trolling. They figured it would be safer to not have women (for the most part) in the middle eastern catalogue. The only mistake they made was, IMO not using different pictures than the Swedish catalogue.
Bungles: The Muthaship: Has someone displeased the Arabs innocuously again? The horror. No, someone has displeased the Jews. It's the Times of Israel that's butthurt.
swamp_of_dumb: Bungles: The Muthaship: Has someone displeased the Arabs innocuously again? The horror. No, someone has displeased the Jews. It's the Times of Israel that's butthurt. If by Joos, you mean Swedes. Here is the Link that subtard couldn't be bothered to link to./i blame the JOOS!
Amos Quito: Isildur: Amos Quito: Isildur: murrdy: do the jews really have room to complain about this sort of thing?[content.animalnewyork.com image 300x454]Different Jews, but yes, that was even more absurd.Hey, if we're going to make sweeping stereotypical statements about groups, let's at least be inclusive.Shall we?Well, since you're the one busy making sweeping stereotypical statements, I'll have to leave that to your discretion.Me from above: "They're not "backwards", they were incorrectly assembled".I see that Ikea joke sailed right over your head. /Derp
moops: AverageAmericanGuy: This is the tradeoff when you want to become a global company. You can either remain stalwart in your core values or you can meld with the local culture.Like Microsoft's products in Poland - apparently black people are taboo there.[farm3.static.flickr.com image 394x500]
carrion_luggage: I like to sit in Ikea demo bathrooms and scream "Occupied!" and "I'm in here!" at passers-by. Does this make me a bad person? And should I feel bad about it?
DownDaRiver: Its not much of a stretch to guess why some of them muslims dudes are uptight.Their religion tells them that this is bad.
Bungles: She wasn't removed. There was a big fuss a few months ago, as it's the first time the catalogue has been entirely computer generated, not using actual physical mocked up rooms. The woman wasn't ever really in either picture because that room doesn't exist. You could just as fairly say she was added to the Western version. How dare they add her for local market tastes! HOW VERY DARE THEY!
UncleStumpy: moops: AverageAmericanGuy: This is the tradeoff when you want to become a global company. ShannonKW: DownDaRiver: Its not much of a stretch to guess why some of them muslims dudes are uptight.Their religion tells them that this is bad.No, it doesn't.I've lived in Saudi Arabia for a few years now (and the conservative, rural quarter of KSA at that). I see some version of this idea bob up reliably in every thread about Muslim attitudes toward women.Saudis approve of women. What they don't approve of (largely, but not entirely, for religious reasons) is the public display of women. This should not be hard for a Westerner to grasp. You can love your mother or your wife or your daughter with all your heart and be very proud of her, yet you can still think it bad to post naked pictures of her on the internet. They are not bad women to you; what is bad is to display them for any filthy pervert to gape at. Similarly, the Saudis do not think that women, or even beautiful naked women, are bad. They don't approve of slapping images of them all around the marketplace for everyone to see.
DownDaRiver: Well gee, thanks sooo much for explaining all that and clearing up everything./sarcasm off
ShannonKW: DownDaRiver: Well gee, thanks sooo much for explaining all that and clearing up everything./sarcasm offYeah, I was halfway through writing that when I realized there wasn't shiat of a chance of it doing any good. Cherished illusion is cherished. White folk still dismissed the Africans for being drum-thumping cannibals long after they had any excuse for believing it. It's just too gratifying to believe that all those people need is an enlightened honky to come and teach 'em the virtues of clean, Christian living and become Lord of the Jungle.
indylaw: You eventually got it.
ciberido: The only "religious" or "life stance-y" group on Fark that everybody seems to want to give a free pass is Buddhism.
stewmadness: Ran into a chick wearing a burka the other day, and her eyes smiled at me. So, I pumped three rounds into her chest and then called her dad. He thanked me, and gave me a goat.
Trocadero: this was the first year they allowed female athletes compete in the Olympics. It's 2012, for fark's sake.
FunkOut: ashinmytomatoes: I am thoroughly convinced that, if the Muslim world had the technology for an artificial womb and a bio-engineered plague that killed only women, they would happily kill all the women. The Tleilaxu with their axlotl tanks.
xl5150: A worldwide company is changing their advertisements to better reflect the core values of a local market. Big deal. Just because Ikea is based in Sweden doesn't mean that their stores in other countries need to reflect the norms of Sweden. People are looking too hard for something to be upset about here.
Wayne 985: "Core values?" Like misogyny?
