cyberspacedout: Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: Why is "Cello" pronounced like it's spelled "Chello"? I've wondered about that since I was small. It's pronounced that way in Italian. The cello comes from the viol family of instruments, which were popularized in Italy. One of its ancestors was the viola da gamba, an instrument meant to be played while held between the legs - which is what the indentations in the side come from. The next invention in the instrument's line was the violoncello da spalla, which was meant to be held by its neck over the player's shoulder. The name somehow got shortened to cello, and some minor tweaks were made during the 17th and 18th century to give us the instrument we've got now.
