If they had introduced air pressure to the bottle, it would've crushed her tongue under the pressure, blown it out the hole and choked her to death. Or, at least do more damage than just destroy her tongue.

1/8" NPT is for guys with small hoses.

Not much pressure would be necessary. Maybe just 1 or 2 PSI. Certainly under 5.

It would certainly be less destructive than the vacuum and constriction that got it in there.

Wasn't vacuum and constriction. She stuck her tongue in it and the tongue swelled up to the point that she couldn't get it out.

I wonder if she had an allergic reaction to the water bottle? At any rate, it's really weird.

Very similar to a girl getting her tongue stuck in a Yahoo bottle about 10-12 years ago. However, they called a glass guy and he was able to cut / break the bottle neck safely and free her.

Chances are that was a Chinese-made stainless water bottle that cost $4-5 or less. They have a very fine, sharp threaded neck compared to the ones with the neck / cap similar to a camp stove fuel bottle. That being said, they could have used the saw thing they use to get rings and stuff off -- it is made to cut stuff like that.

I don't think that's anatomically possible.

She likely was sucking on the mouth of the bottle then stuck her tongue in while a partial vacuum was drawn. Easy to do and far more plausible.

Yeah, the problem is, the ring saw is made to cut gold and other soft metals. If this was stainless, the blade probably isn't up to it. Also the radius on a ring-saw isn't going to be long enough to get through the entire neck. Access is also a problem.

/no fun for anyone involved, I'm sure.
//people don't like when you have to use the saw on their rings. But they're sure glad when the ring comes off.

qlenfg: . That being said, they could have used the saw thing they use to get rings and stuff off -- it is made to cut stuff like that.

That's what I was thinking.
If they cut the bottle lengthwise they perhaps could have split it in half once the "drill hole in the bottom" thing didn't work.

Then again, they probably see something like this so rarely that while under pressure, they couldn't think it out.

2012-09-17 11:05:37 PM
Perhaps the water bottle wasn't squeezable plastic, but if it were -- couldn't you squeeze it hard enough that the air pressure would force the tongue out? Kind of like the Heimlich maneuver for water bottles.

/They probably tried it and it didn't work, but I'm curious.

Growing up I went through the braces phase. It didn't last too long, but it wasn't fun, and my mouth seemed to be a pro at finding all the little pokey bits of metal (and there were quite a few). Most of these were annoying but harmless. However there was one god-awful day when my braces managed to pierce the webby stuff that connects my tongue to the bottom of my mouth. My tongue was stuck. I couldn't get it off. And my sister, biatch that she was, decided to do everything she could to make me laugh.

/everything is funnier with pain-induced hysteria

The biatch with ring saws is that you have to do the cut _twice_ to get any slack in the thing you're cutting. A stainless cylinder is going to be pretty springy, cutting it once only gives you yet another sharp thing to worry about while you cut it the second time. Plus, getting in far enough to get it on the bottle is going to be un-fun.

It wouldn't be a bad job if only not for the patient attached to it. I don't think it's so much of thought under pressure, as "OK what can we try next that doesn't eliminate the next option we're going to try".

These metal water bottles have threading for the plastic stopper. She obviously stuck her tongue in and because of the threading and tongue swelling it made it difficult to withdraw. Not surprised she has nerve damage on her tongue as those things are pretty sharp.

That's the first thing that came to my mind. I used to do this as a kid until I pulled such a good vacuum on a glass bottle that I had great difficulty pulling my tongue out. I never did it again.

Being a guy, I could certainly imagine her being better at that than I was, and if they left her like that long enough, the vacuum would cause serious swelling as they described. The suggestion to pressurize the inside is a brilliant solution, I think.

Oh THOSE things. yeah, I can see why they had to put her out. It would just be very hard to get her tongue out of that while she's awake. Just imagine her little tongue jerking all around and spasming as they tried to cut the bottle off. She wouldn't be able to help it.

I'm not trying to be dirty; I'm serious.

What do you think is anatomically impossible about that? Sticking your tongue into a water bottle or your tongue swelling up?

This isn't the normal partial vacuum stuff. You wouldn't need surgery for that. There's a number of plastics that'll make your tongue or lips swell up if you're sensitive to it. Bisphenol A, maybe. She would have been fine drinking from it, but when her tongue touched those plastic threads...that would be a biatch to get her out of it.

She probably sounded like a donkey with an arrow in its butt, and her mother was just as bad. If they just split the bottle off, there's also a risk that clots formed in the tip of her tongue, so they have to patiently break those up or they'll lodge in her heart or brain. If she was awake, what kind of chance would the doctors get to work on her tongue if she's scared they'll cut it off or something?

An 8-year-old Georgia girl was left traumatized last week after her tongue got stuck in a water bottle she was drinking from.

They tried to work on her, punching holes in the can and even calling in maintenance to cut the bottom of the bottle off.

Bottle, can, whatever. At least be consistent.

So none of you Farkers can understand how this could happen nor why compressed air is bad?
See, there are these thing called arteries, they carry blood to things in your body.
And there are veins, they carry blood away from things in your body.
If a vein in a part of your body gets blocked or cut off, that part fills with blood.
Have none of you had a toilet overflow?

I'm going to give you advice that will change your life: Go play paintball. 1/8 NPT is the standard for all air connections before the regulator for that. It doesn't matter how bad your knees or back are, it's safer than bowling. And awesome. You won't like it - until you see that first ball of yours fly across the air and pop a noob in the mask.

For those who are saying this will explode her tongue, well, that's why god invented people who invented regulators for. Or, I guess, a competent adult could've blown into it. That would've been best. But you know, sexual assault lawsuits prevent that from happening.

Never done paintball.. work too much. I have built pneumatic equipment utilizing 1/8 MPT adapters for 1/4 tubing.. push to lock.. but they were not the quick connect type displayed.. kid stuck her tongue in a soda-type can, got it stuck.. can has to be cut apart to release the tongue.. no easy way....
