Francisco Cabrera drove in former Pirate Sid Bream to win the NLCS. And then Barry Bonds left for San Francisco.

I once figured that probably a third of MLB teams had some curse or another. The Cubs I trace back not to a billy goat but to Merkle's Boner. The Yankees had the Curse of Don Mattingly (4 AL pennants in 6 years before he showed up, 0 ALCS appearances while he was there, and then 6 pennants in 8 years after he left). The Mets had the Curse of Nolan Ryan (traded Ryan to the Angels, and it wasn't until after an on-field ceremony where he wore a Mets jersey for the first time since the trade that the Mets finally pitched a no-hitter).

I used to think the White Sox had the Curse of Shoeless Joe. But they won the World Series in 2005 without his ever having been removed from the Permanently Ineligible list, which would have been required to break the curse. So it wasn't a curse; those 88 years of futility the White Sox did all by themselves.

The thought of the Orioles in the playoffs excites me. Mostly because I remember the last time they were playing in the ALCS against Cleveland. We were 19 and drove from West Lafayette to Windsor to hit the casino and drink some Rickard's Red. Started off that Thursday night watching the game in the hotel bar. Missed out on a potentially fun night with three Michigan State girls that weekend. Let this be a lesson to you, kids: Don't hit the Rickard's Red too hard in Windsor.

The O's have not lost back to back games since Aug 16-17, and have won 17 of 24 games since.

After 14 years of futility and "Confederate money" a guarantee of a non-losing season is enough to make us deliriously happy. A win today (I am hoping for 2 out of 3 this weekend but I am not counting on it the way the A's are playing) or at any time in this series will be cause for another celebration. All that said, we are not at all satisfied with a non-losing season. We want moar.

And when the Brewers beat the Mets tonight, the Bucs will fall to fourth place in the division and we can stop pretending they're going to get a wild card slot. The Cubs definitely have the Pirate's number this year.

As an old (and I mean old) Pirates fan I was hoping that both the Orioles and the Pirates made it back in the playoffs to relive my 1971 (Boog Powell, Brooks Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Steve Blass) and 1979 (Eddie Murray, Ken Singleton, Dave Parker, Omar Moreno) days.

But alas, it was not to be.

And as a die hard Pittsburgher who vomits in his mouth at the name Ray Lewis I have no problem in saying GO O's.

Actually, I understand. The entire reason for the A's success this year can be attributed to whether I wear my black A's hat or not. If I'm wearing it and they win, I continue to wear it until they lose. Then I don't wear it until they lose again. No, I'm not a wizard. It's all in the hat. I'm just the catalyst.

With football, it's much easier. I have lots of Denver Bronco gear, but it never gets touched during the season. I learned this lesson the hard way, during the '49er-Broncos Super Bowl. I had most every bit of Broncos crap I own on, and attended a '49ers Super Bowl party as the only Broncos fan in attendance. NOT a red-letter day. :)
