Get 'em all off the road.

That way, the good drivers can go 80mph in the left lane unimpeded by the morons.

2003-11-24 2:12:41 PM
Dear SUV driver in my rearview,

Going 85 MPH in a 55 zone is illegal no matter what lane you are in. So kindly get off my farking ass!!!

Yours kindly,

Jabber

Wow it only took two posts.

2003-11-24 2:18:38 PM
SO move over Jabber, and let me get my ticket.

2003-11-24 2:21:48 PM
I say raise the speed limits to 105mph, and then all the new SUVs with governors can't ride my bumper in the left lane.

2003-11-24 2:22:48 PM
I don't get it. Even if we had highway speed limits of 30 MPH there would still be people getting killed. You'll never win, so might as well crank those limits up and just make it harder to get a license. Contrary to popular belief, the right to drive a car is not the 28th Amendment.

/Go, Speed Racer, Go!

Jabber:

All you have to do is stay the fark out of the left lane.

Dear Geo Metro going 55 in the fast lane:

Get out of the farking way.

Love,

In Colorado, which has a speed limit of 75 mph, researchers observed one in four drivers going above 80 mph.

There is no way that can be accurate. I drive here, and one in four is a very conservative estimate. Maybe it's a typo, and they meant to say only one in four drivers was going below that speed.

Dear retard going 55mph in the left hand lane,

Get out of my way before I decide to shoot you.

Yours,
Nightbreed.

Dear Northern Virginia and DC Asshats that fark up my commute to work every night:

Learn how to drive....turn signals work...contrary to popular belief cutting people off after driving on the shoulder is NOT an accepted merging technique...a little bit of water only hurt the wicked witch of the west, it will not hurt your car no need for my one hour commute to turn into two because of water.

That is all.........for now
Suck me and get the fark out of my way,

Dear Triad area drivers:

Thanks for giving me cover as we all do 75 in a 55 in an attempt to get to work on time.

Sincerely,
BooBoo

2003-11-24 3:19:00 PM
Oh my...lets make the speed limit 1 MPH then nobody will die!

2003-11-24 3:38:27 PM
Speed limits need to be 100mph here. Just about everyone in Michigan drives that fast anyways.

2003-11-24 3:38:34 PM
phareous, some moron would still manage to fark that up.

The problem with increasing speed limits has NOTHING to do with safety, it has to do with revenue. The smart idea would be to issue speeding permits (for a fee to offset lost ticket revenue) to those who can pass a more rigorous driving test and who keep their vehicles maintained properly, this would be implemented by giving you a sticker to stick on the rear of your car stating you are allowed to speed 10,20,30 MPH over the posted limit on freeways.

Penalties for speeding over your allowed limit would be VERY severe to keep farks with a 30mph permit going another 10to15 over the limit like we all do now.

Reckless driving laws would still apply and perhaps punishments doubled, and speed permits revoked permanently if someone is driving recklessly (weaving in and out of traffic, etc) while using their speeding permit.

/Have thought about this waaaay too much

2003-11-24 3:40:12 PM
Hmmm, doing 75 in a ford escort or Pontiac 6000 isn't the safest of things. Maybe the should look at what people were driving when they crashed.

The autobahn doesn't seem to have that problem...

I'd seriously like to see some critical analysis of the data. This is pretty much directly contrary to the initial studies that came out when states started going from 55 to 65 that showed no effect on fatalities. It's obvious that IIHS went to some trouble to make this look unbiased (by bringing in the Kiwis to put the report together), but ultimately, all the research came from IIHS, and they're just too biased for me to take at face value.

People that cruise in the passing lane should be taken out into the street and beaten with their cell phones.

Dear SUV driver in my rearview,

Well speeding is probably a lot safer than posting on fark while driving. What happens if you get into a flame war?

2003-11-24 3:42:18 PM
Unfortunately it's not always the bad drivers who are killed by the bad drivers.

2003-11-24 3:42:23 PM
And if the national speed limit was 20mph, there would be even fewer deaths! That obviously means we should reduce the limit to 20mph. In fact, if civilians were not allowed to drive at all, traffic accidents would almost entirely go away. Thus, we should repeal civilian driver's licenses.

2003-11-24 3:42:34 PM
Let's just make a law requiring that your license plate number be the same as your cellphone number.

2003-11-24 3:43:14 PM
Yeah. In Michigan, 5 over is generally a nuisance to all the other drivers who are going approximately the speed of sound.

Also:

Authority of New Zealand, determined 1,880 more people died between 1996 and 1999 in the 22 states with higher speed limits.

What exactly is that compared to? The number that died in 1920? The number that died yesterday? Per Year?

2003-11-24 3:43:35 PM
Notice that nowhere does it say the increase in speed limits CAUSED the increase in the number of deaths, it merely coincided.

Ice cream sales and crime rates go up in the summertime, does ice cream consumption cause crime?

2003-11-24 3:43:47 PM
I want to die like my grandfather, quietly in my sleep. Not like the other 3 in the car, screaming in terror..

2003-11-24 3:43:54 PM
Doesn't matter how fast or slow the limit is set at in Jersey. Everyone on the Turnpike and Parkway has been traveling at least 80 mph since the early 90s.

2003-11-24 3:43:57 PM
Semi-serious post:
Boston drivers scare the shiat out of me, being a pedestrian. Do you drivers need to take a left or right turn so close ? I pray for the day when you snag my jacket or other clothing and drag me down the road. Then, if I'm still alive and only a quadraplegic, I can watch them toss yopur arse in jail and sue you for whatever little money you have, although I hope you have insurance, so they can foot the bill as well.

Oh, and don't even get me started on when I do drive, and I see people that were born and bred in Massachusetts who STILL can't navigate rotaries ...

2003-11-24 3:44:25 PM
Headline writer obviously thinks it's the stupid ones that are killed whereas drunk drivers prove that it is the stupid drivers that live.

2003-11-24 3:44:30 PM
Just allow me to be the arbiter of all driving, put a steel battering ram on the front of my car, and let me knock poor drivers off the road...

2003-11-24 3:44:37 PM
Cars are so much safer today than they were when the speed limit was dropped for fuel costs in the 1970's. I find the miniscule rise in deaths compared to the growth in population to be extremely acceptable.

BTW, why is New Zealand doing traffic studies of the U.S.?

2003-11-24 3:44:38 PM
Ignorant Farkers:

If you're in the left lane and someone is on your rear bumper, YOU have the problem, not them. Go to Germany and learn how non-morons drive.

That was my thought too... or the studies that showed no increase in travel speeds before and after speed limit changes??

Interesting how a group that raises your rates when you get a speeding ticket says speeding is bad, but doesn't publish the actual data?

2003-11-24 3:46:10 PM
Note: even the article admits that how fast the average speed is depends on perceived enforcement. So, the ONE THING that cops can do to actually prevent deaths, they don't do.

2003-11-24 3:46:49 PM

Refusing to move to the right is illegal no matter how fast you're going, and it also means you're an asshole.

You forgot one more thing for DC driving:

Please hang up and drive. Just because you are alone in your car doesn't mean you need to call someone. Or at least get a hands-free headset so you can operate turnsignals, wipers, etc.

2003-11-24 3:47:06 PM
Oh, and don't even get me started on when I do drive, and I see people that were born and bred in Massachusetts who STILL can't navigate rotaries ...

What, people who own RX7/8's can't drive?

Dear hippie Geo driver not exceeding the speed limit in the fast lane. You obviously don't have anywhere important to go....please try using the scenic side-streets.

They offer much in the way of scenery which you seem to appreciate much more than getting to whererver the fark you are going. The rest of us have things to do.

Sincerely,
Non-Brain dead drivers of America

And today's math lesson is: always compare fractions by their numerators (deaths), ignoring the denominators (total miles driven).

2003-11-24 3:47:58 PM
And for crying out loud howcum Florida has "minimun speed 45" on their highways? I dare you to drive 45 on 95 or 75. I double-dare you.

2003-11-24 3:48:33 PM
ha funny headline

2003-11-24 3:48:34 PM
I'm with filth. Show me a bar graph - death's per month - for each state with a clear label showing when speed limits were changed.

Also, I only want to see rural interstate deaths. Somebody getting killed when some asshat runs a red light and broadsides them is tragic and all, but has nothing to do with the interstate speed limits.

2003-11-24 3:48:35 PM
filth:

You have it backwards. When the speed limit was initially increased the overall number of accidents went down, but a higher percentage of them were fatal.

Thus if you look at the death rate alone, you see an increase.

2003-11-24 3:48:59 PM
The study, compiled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety based on data collected by the Land Transport Safety Authority of New Zealand

So there you have it folks! New Zealand is part of the US. Either that, or someone's looking at the wrong data. :)

BTW, article deserves Obvious tag. Any farktard driving 30 miles over the limit is asking for trouble or a Darwin Award.
