Baryogenesis: daytight: I don't really see where going for 4th and short in the 2nd quarter is a jerk move, but I've seen these shmucks do it late in a bunch of blowouts. Oh well, they always lose at least one big one every year. That silly gadget offense always costs them a win sooner or later, usually when they face someone who can trot out equal talent. Counterintuitive, but it's often their D that breaks down because the offense scores too fast. No rest for the defense.

Hopefully they don't change anything, as I'd hate to see jerk face get a national title, and I think their uniform choices look bush league. Both cheapen the sport.

I don't agree that an offense built on speed means it's a gadget offense. I do agree that they are very vulnerable to power teams who are good at chewing up the clock. It keeps the Ducks offense off the field and tires out a defense built for speed.


The score as fast as possible philosophy is flawed, and nearly never pans out over the course of a season. Time of possession is a huge advantage when the teams are roughly equal in talent. Most great coaches design the offense with that in mind. Kelly is an exception. That makes it a gadget to me. It exciting, but not necessarily fundamentally sound.

Unconventional doesn't mean gadget. It's a team that's come as close as anyone to beating the SEC in the title game. There are pros and cons to every style. There are plenty of shiatty power running, clock dominating teams. There are plenty of shiatty spread offense teams.

I think the biggest problem Oregon has had recently is a weak D (on top of being on the field a ton because of the fast offense). An improve defense would help a ton.

There's a difference between not slaughtering a lesser team for shiats and giggles and patronizing them by not even attempting to play (somewhat) normally.


When you're killing someone that bad then yes, you stop passing and just the ball.

If you still score then fine but you don't use another team as your practice punching double.

You know what Florida fans do when they win National Championships (in any sport)? They have another cocktail Nattie Liight and then go home back to their mobile home lots.

Meh. We're OU...we don't need a reason to get hammered and fill the street but it helps.

varmitydog: Florida State leads in their opener at halftime, 28-3 against Murray State. They really look good this year, but then again it's cupcake season so who knows how good they really are. One worry has been taken away, they kicked their ace punt return man, Greg Reid, off the team but they have replaced him with yet another track star with more moves than ex-lax who might even be better.

They have an interesting roster this year. They have golfer Jack Nicholson's grandson Nick O'Leary starting at tight end. They have all world RB in high school James Wilder Jr at third string because they are so deep with talented running backs. They have an outstanding senior quarterback in EJ Manuel, who at 6'5 245 pounds is a load. They have Bjoern Werner, the Berlin Beserker, anchoring their defensive line. Most of the first team defense and probably a lot of the second team defense is going to be playing on Sundays one day; they are so fast on defense they run down their mistakes. They have an NFL quality place kicker in Dustin Hopkins.

Yes, Florida State is most definitely back.


Oddly enough, a Michigan fan (not alumnus) told me Wednesday that Michigan was going to win the MNC this year.

The punting thing? Hell, I think Nick Saban's done worse than that in the sport; whether or not it be at Alabama is irrelevant. He's certainly had times against lesser competition where he has had his guys run through the motions in the 2nd quarter of a blowout, so I don't see the punting thing being all that different due to the nature of Oregon's gameplan. If anything, this kind of behavior shows that Chip doesn't have a solution for a team that can slow the Oregon offense; he's a one-trick pony who relies on athletes more than coaching (reminds me of Les Miles, actually...), but he needs to score in order to win.

I have more problem with Kelly allowing a few of his players to get too loose on the field and get a little cheap throughout the years, though he's not nearly at the level of some teams I've seen (that aforementioned Auburn team, or the average Boise State squad in a big game in the past 3 or 4 years).

Again, he's a dick AND a questionable game manager against good competition, but I'm pretty much used to this kind of stuff by now. Oregon does what Oregon does, and frankly stupidity in the 2nd quarter of a blowout (that ended up being closer than the score should have been, after Oregon literally did not play the 2nd half) is low on my list of problems with the program.

Plus, I mean, I can't help but point out the irony in a fan of a school whose greatest achievement is winning a lot of championships without being sanctioned as often as Auburn complaining about the sportsmanship of a guy who doesn't punt on 4th down in a blowout, particularly in a sport where voters value points and MOV.

Patronize is the stupidest word you could have used, it's common god dammed courtesy to just run the ball when up that big. Rule one in sports, do not embarrass your opponent, they embarrassed that team and its funny because this sticks out to other coaches who will be more than happy to return the favor.

If you can't see that then you are missing the biggest point, its a better farking strategy to run the ball as it runs off time more than an incomplete pass or first downs. Chip Kelly is a prick, they didn't stop scoring until the 3rd string went in, that is more embarrassing than anything else.

There is no situational need to go for it on 4 th in a game you can already tell was going to be won handily after the first 22 points were put up on the board. Absolutely none. Just like there was no need to increase the tempo after ark state managed to get a field goal (which happened, even commentators picked up on that, and we can mostly agree they have iq levels bordering on pond-scum. Did you notice?).

The only excusable action by Kelly has been the 2 point conversion call, and even that is a weak excuse. Once again, I highly doubt he ...


Oh for Christ's sake, the starters were out with seven minutes left in the 2nd quarter when it was 50-3. We were playing the team manager by the end of the game. The first team needs to get in actual reps. They are breaking in a new QB after all. I think Arky St can handle 1 and a half quarters of real football.

I could care less if they win a National Championship. I just enjoy watching them play. They are fun to watch. But ya, I guess winning the Rose Bowl last year against a tough Wisconsin team doesn't count for anything. Or barely losing to Auburn in the NCG means they suck.

I'm actually a real fan. I've had my same seats in Autzen for over 20 years. I've been going to the games since I was in grade school. I've seen the worst of Oregon football (Toilet Bowl anyone?) and now I'm seeing the best. I don't expect it to last forever. But I will still be enjoying the games even when it doesn't.

But if not winning a National Championship means that my team sucks then so be it. I'd much rather be me than you though. You must feel like your team is a total waste any time they don't win the NCG. Do you try to get a refund from the AD when they don't? I would. After all, what's the point of college football if you can't win it all every year?

My point from the beginning was that your team's talent would be better served with a better coach, and that your coach is a jerk. You broke out "Hater's gonna hate".

You ought to be ashamed of your coach's poor sportsmanship LATE in games. We both know he has a history of embarrassing lesser teams. Not yesterday, but historically. You should also be embarrassed about your team's flashy uniforms. They are a joke.

If you look back at my comments, I said he's a great recruiter. I also defended jerk face's conduct yesterday. It was out of character for him to call off the dogs.

Your team is clearly a second tier team nationally. Good for them for their Rose Bowl win, and I suppose they get a hair more credit than Northwestern being they won one whereas NW lost last time they were there. Still, the Rose Bowl doesn't mean nearly as much as it did pre-BCS.

At the end of the day they are the second best team in the 2nd-5th best conference depending upon your opinion. Good, but nothing special.

If this thread proves anything it's that the sports tab can be trolled just as hard as the politics tab. Thanks for that, Daylight.

Of course the alternative is that you know jack shiat about football, but nobody can be as simply clueless about college ball as that so trolling makes the most sense.

I went to the UM-Alabama game. After UM stopped them on their first series, I should have left.
But I was in a luxury box with ~20 of my oldest friends. With all the free beer and pizza, we somehow found a way to soldier through the entire game.
