I watched the video yesterday and there was no obvious ground fire, missile or otherwise, if it was shot down it was by the small caliber golden BB variety. Jet engines pushed to their limit do in fact just go boom sometimes, particularly ones subject to the dodgy maintenance available in Syria's air force.

State media also said Syrian armed forces in central Homs province had killed a large number of "mercenary terrorists".

So they're doing it for money AND politics?

The BBC's Frank Gardner says the man whom rebels claim they captured "appears rather old for a fighter pilot"

Your ageist colours are showing, BBC.

"appears rather old for a fighter pilot"??? The LAST thing anyone should want is some snot nosed punk kid flying a sophisticated piece of hardware like that. Best left to a grown man.

I was worried it was going to be a passenger jet. Relieved it was just a fighter.

This was my thought too, unless the rebels have managed to sign Deadeye.

Considering the nature of the rebels, combined with what the Syrian aircraft have actually been doing, I'd say that this guy is pretty well farked.

Interesting aircraft too. Aleppo has been getting bombed by L-39 and SU-22s, this is the first time I've seen a MiG-23 (especially the -BM ground attack version) in use.

Apparently the Syrian Air Force definition of a "training mission" consists of practicing dropping live ordnance on rebels.

Perhaps it flew through a Flock of Seagulls?

/since the nation which backs the Syrian government the most is "so far away"
//with the amount of hairspray in that chaps hair, it'd be likely to chew up any engine it went through
