I guess she was hittable by 1889 standards.

Hittable with an adze-cut plank, perhaps. She's Daily Mail smoking.

One of my favorite movies and novels.

The subplot involving George Reeves was left almost entirely on the cutting room floor after previews because people kept yelling 'Superman' every time he was on screen. And they left the whole ghey thing out as well.

GibbyTheMole: While it gets a lot less attention, the unsolved 1912 Villisca, Iowa axe murders were even more gruesome, and the details of the case are more bizarre.

More info here.

In 1912 in a small house in Villisca, Iowa, 6 children and two adults were hacked to death by an unknown killer with an axe. Suspects included a state senator, a traveling British minister/pervert, and a drifter. A few little known and bizarre facts about the case:

1) There was a theory at the time that the last thing a person saw before their death was imprinted on their corneas. Because of this, the two little girls who were killed downstairs (who still had their eyes intact) had their eyeballs removed and dissected in an attempt to get an image of the killer.

2) After murdering his 8 victims, the killer went to the pantry and fixed himself a snack. He wrapped up a side of bacon in a dishtowel and left it at the foot of the bed containing the murdered girls in the downstairs bedroom, along with a lamp with the chimney removed. He did the same at the foot of the murdered parents' bed.

3) It's a very small house. (I've been in it.) Upstairs, the kids' bedroom (where 4 children were killed) is right next to the parents' room with no door between. How so many murders could have been committed without waking the others is pretty inconceivable.

More odd facts here.

It's one of America's most heinous and weirdest unsolved murder cases. Not the most famous, for some reason.

And that is why there was a call from the liberals to ban the ax.
Fortunately, no one listened to the liberals back then.

Which to me has always struck me as bizarre. It's the equivalent of yelling 'David Addison' at the screen during Die Hard or 'Doug Ross' during From Dusk til Dawn.

Eh, it was a different time. And, Superman was really all Reeves was known for.

And it's not like typecasting doesn't still kill careers. Although, Hollywood has gotten better at getting people to accept actors who are well known for one role in other roles.

It should strike you as bizarre. It's not true. The screenwriter for the film has stated that be didn't write any scenes for Reeve's character that didn't make the film.

After reading The devil and the white city I did some googling about early American serial killers. There is a school of thought that there was a serial axe murderer that hit several different cities/towns around the country about that time.

Haven't read that particular book, but I'm familiar with the theory. It's the one that makes the most sense, IMO. There was a guy that was convicted of very similar murders in other cities in the midwest around the same time. For some reason they never seriously connected him with Villisca, but he's the most likely suspect, in my opinion.

she is getting naked so she can go and splatter her parents without getting blood on her clothes
there is a later scene in the movie where she is washing the blood off her naked body

I as well. This is the first I've heard of it. My life now has meaning once again.

I saw the TV movie when it first came out. She was in shadow so your imagination went into overdrive.

I've been to the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast Museum twice. Tiny house with little privacy for the people living there. And a dress Elizabeth Montgomery wore in the movie is on display.

// The movie as shown in the US never had any naked Elizabeth Montgomery. Somehow I doubt it inspired any whacking.

brief shadow body, walking in the basement, in the scene she's supposed to be changing out of the murder clothes. The movie got hyped for weeks, an A list TV actress disrobes in this highly dramatic TV event.

I was a 12 year old girl when it was shown, and I recall naked legs stepping out of a fallen, unbuttoned dress. It was wonderfully suggestive; it shocked me to see Samantha Stevens get naked right on TV. Plus the idea of Lizzy murdering her parents while naked upped the lurid factor to 11.
