(The Hollywood Reporter)   Rush Limbaugh is just asking questions: Did Obama's handlers invent a time machine, go back to the early 90s and infiltrate DC Comics, and create the Bane character just so voters would associate the name with Bain Capital in 2012?   (hollywoodreporter.com) divider line

Yes.

"So this evil villain in the new Batman movie is named Bane. And there's discussion out there as to whether or not this was purposeful and whether or not it will influence voters. It's going to have a lot of people," he continued. "The audience is going to be huge. A lot of people are going to see the movie. And it's a lot of brain-dead people -- entertainment, the pop culture crowd -- and they're going to hear Bane in the movie and they're going to associate Bain."

Slow applause.gif

Rush just planted the bug in his listeners ear. Now they'll associate the 2.

And the bolded quote is priceless. Anyone venture to guess who else entertains huge audiences of brain dead people?

Maybe he used the one Romney used to go back and retire from Bain Capital before they laid off all those workers.

2012-07-17 8:11:10 PM
Aren't there many villains named Bane? Seems like a go-to name for a lazy writer trying to think of a bad guy.

YAY!

Rush did something I can appreciate!

And for the record, he's not "just asking" the question, he's giving wings to this new conspiracy theory... because of course Warner Brothers wants a pinko in office, even though Romney is the one promising to slash corporate taxes... never mind the logic, it will only hurt your head.

To be fair, the first time I heard someone refer to "Bain Capital", my first reaction was that that's a bit on the nose if you're trying to pretend your company isn't evil. Given that, y'know, 'bane' is an English word meaning a personal nemesis and had been for several centuries before comic books were even a thing.

Didn't realize it was someone's name until I saw it in writing and learned the spelling.

To the extent that everything that comes out of his mouth is disingenuous, then you are correct. But read the linked article before you make any bets, because his "character" was 100% serious. He sourced it to the usual "some people" and just ran with it.

Yes, Freepers, the Obama camp went back to the early 2000s and got Warners to invest 150 million dollars and hire a director who had only done indie films to reboot a franchise that suffered an embarassing fourth installment. The end result was Batman Begins.

Obama then parlayed that into a megahit sequel that cost not just 200 million dollars, but also the life of a critically acclaimed actor.

You heard it here. Buildabear Hungryhungryhippos Fartbambo killed Heath Ledger to drum up support (Or did Ledger commit suicide for Obama's cause? Remember, he did that movie that made good hearted conservatives feel a little uncomfortable for the way they were looking at George W. clearing brush and their hero, cowboy Ronnie.)

Obama then parlayed that into an extremely anticipated $250 million sequel with a villain named Bane that would open this weekend on the off chance he'd be running for re-election to the presidency against someone who had something to do with Bain Capital. A person really unknown outside of Massachusetts at the time this conspiracy began.

Seriously Rush, pull your head out of the Dominican kid's ass.

2012-07-17 9:03:59 PM
Conservatives care entirely too much about fiction. Nolan's first Batman and second Batman films, and Taken, and a couple of others were championed by conservatives as vindicating their views on how to deal with threats and oh ho ho it's so ironic that liberals loved those fictional stories. Archie comics has a gay marriage, Superman says in a comic he's a citizen of Earth instead of a citizen of the USA, V for Vendetta, JK Rowling outs Dumbledore as a gay character, and a few others and conservatives suddenly retroactively hated both Archie and Superman since as long as they could remember for always being so anti-American.

Is their passionate love/hate relationship with fantasy related to how outside of reality they currently live? They can't just be incredibly passionate nerds. This has to be seen as an assault on their direct perception of reality instead of just an entertainment outlet they happen to find sends a disagreeable message.

Knightfall was a great series, but the rest of the story arc made about as much sense as Rush's rant.

And please don't answer that you are simply responding to the market. Because that is not true. In the movie business, as Michael Medved points out, the most profitable films are the ones most friendly to the family. Last year, the top five grossing films were the blockbusters "The Lion King", "Forrest Gump", shown by being here, and feel a great sense of hope and confidence that together we will succeed - not only in this Presidential race, but in our larger mission to reaffirm the goodness and greatness of the United States of America.

You understand that city and state taxing authorities are part of the governments of those entities right?

Capitalize it all you want, you can't insert the word "federal" into the original post.

Studios also use creative accounting methods to ensure that even wildly successful movies end up as a net loss to avoid taxes (as well as royalties to the creative personnel).

I don't know the macro economics of the whole thing (given all the people they employ and the economic activity surrounding the production and consumption of movies), but Hollywood has a culture of tax-dodging that goes back to its roots.

Christopher and Jonathan Nolan: Both British, meaning they love socialism
Christian Bale: Welsh, so socialist, and his stepmom is Gloria Steinam (feminazi and Joo)
Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine: more socialist Brits
Morgan Freeman: "Attractive and successful"
Anne Hathaway: Hollywood liberal (and possibly Joo)

The writing is on the wall, people. This was a planned 3-year, $250 million attack ad against the Mittster. Why can't you believe the incoherent ramblings of an Oxycontin-addled pederast and see the truth for yourselves?

I hate people like you.

"Unless you claim to know every related fact and figure of an obscure and secretive industry, your well known facts and widely accepted mild conclusions collapse into a single cluster of unsupported opinions that I can discount out of hand."

I don't care how hard you work or how much you learn, there's no way you're going to have enough information to evaluate the net benefit of the movie industry (economic contribution vs. tax evasion) with any precision or accuracy. Pretending that you have command of those facts isn't a prerequisite of having a layman's knowldge of Hollywood's well known history of creative accounting, nor of sharing that knowledge in a superficial discussion of public subsidisation of the movie industry.

You're reading too much into it. Most likely, the writers were brainstorming names and saw a picture of Bob Kane hanging up in the office.

It probably went like this. "Hmmm. Bob Kane, B. Kane, B ane, Bane. Wait a minute, like 'bane of my existence.' Of course."

Cut them some slack. It probably gets difficult to write new material for a story that's been continually published for fifty years.

Um... Bane is a totally generic name but:

bane [beyn] Show IPA
noun
1.
a person or thing that ruins or spoils: Gambling was the bane of his existence.
2.
a deadly poison (often used in combination, as in the names of poisonous plants): wolfsbane; henbane.
3.
death; destruction; ruin.

Bane is a villain who uses poison to pump himself up AND who ruins and destroys batman (his intro story arc was about him breaking batman's back and being like the first villain to really ruin him... at least for a time). His name was totally appropriate, if generic. "Bane of his existence" etc.

O.M.G.

*prolonged golf clap*

2012-07-18 8:50:57 AM
It goes way deeper than that. His handlers have been gradually influencing the evolution of the English language for the last thousand years, guiding the separation of the Old English word "bana" from the Proto-Germanic "banon", and then insidiously shifting its meaning from "killer" to the more modern "that which causes ruin or woe" around 1570 - probably by using drone strikes on anyone who used the old definition.

Simultaneously, Obama engineered the Norse invasions of England, leading to the introduction to Old English of the Old Norse word "beinn", meaning "straight or direct", which over time (and through his handlers' machinations) shifted to to Northern Middle English "bayn", meaning "welcoming," so that people would begin using it as a desirable surname. Eventually Obama shifted the vowel to an I, placing the name "Bain" exactly where he wanted it for the 2012 campaign's malicious associative attacks on Romney.

We're through the looking glass here, people.

Didn't realize it was someone's name until I saw it in writing and learned the spelling.

Yeah, I came to say this. The word has been around for a long time and it doesn't conjure up thoughts of rainbows and puppy dogs.

Note to self:

When creating or working for a company that will make me even more filthy rich, and I have a desire to serve in public office in the future, be sure that said company's name isn't a homophone for a word with a negative connotation.

Dwight_Yeast: ArcadianRefugee: Reminds me of V for Vendetta, when some people were biatching that it was all about the US and Bush and 9/11 and herp derp derp.

I'm pretty sure the siblings W made it very clear that the events which happened after 11 Sept 01 strongly influenced their decision to make that movie when they did.

Because it so beautifully excoriated the Right-wing media in the US and UK (Stephen Fry's character stands out) the right-wing media went -as they do- apeshiat.

Nonetheless, "The first episodes of V for Vendetta [the comic book] originally appeared in black-and-white between 1982 and 1985. . ."

/Maybe Alan Moore borrowed Obama's time machine . . .

I might be naive but I don't think even Rush is this stupid. He's got to be doing some parody schtick.
