FTFA: "Extreme Parenting will look at a range of America's kookiest parenting rituals, shedding a spotlight further on the much-hyped arguments for and against weaning your child after the age of one."

FTWHO: "WHO strongly recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. At six months, other foods should complement breastfeeding for up to two years or more. In addition:
-breastfeeding should begin within an hour of birth;
-breastfeeding should be "on demand", as often as the child wants day and night; and
-bottles or pacifiers should be avoided. "

That kooky WHO. But then they use science and whatnot and Fark doesn't buy all that sciency-y nonsense. You BIE-obsessed wonders are somehow mortified at the omnipresent spectre of titties being "whipped out" all over the place. The world is truly a terrifying place.

Think about this statement for a moment. When your 14-month-old wakes up in tears from a bad dream or because of a thunderstorm, do you tell him to STFU and be a man? No? Anything else is just placating his infantile need for "comfort." And don't even tell me that immature brat still likes hugs before you leave for work!

baska: Can you not provide adequate comfort and reassurance without sticking a tit in the kid's mouth?

If nursing is suddenly inappropriate for comforting a child, then why should any other childish comfort be appropriate? For the record, I cannot comfort a child with my breast as I'm a guy. I've lived with a breastfeeding wife for the last five years (across three kids) and have seen:
1. Nothing remotely creepy nor sexual between mother and child (including our many friends that nursed their kids)
2. No "whipping out" of anything in public and even rarely in private
3. No strange behavior as a result of having weaned after 12 months of age, nor any particular air of indulgence at offering the same.

It is just so strange to see the terror with which seemingly reasonable farkers react to the thought of a 15-month-old nursing. I mean, the AWs on here that use their titties to get farkers to buy them things off their Amazon wishlists I understand; their relationship with their tits is a uniquely commercial one. But man there's a whole lot of breathless fear of nursing on this site.

I'd like to offer a tip of the cap to those that suggested "American Suckers," "Jugrats," and "Battlestar Lactica" however. Those were good.

It provides more than comfort. Breastfeeding continues to provide anti-bodies and a uniquely digestible food source. The anti-bodies help prevent various infections. Children who continue to be breastfed get sick less often than their peers who have been weaned or who are bottle fed.

The fact that the breast milk is uniquely digestible came in handy within our family when my kids were about one and two years of age. They both got sick one night. It was a long night of diarrhea, vomiting, and high fever. The following day, they could not hold down any food or liquid except breast milk. Even a glass of water resulted in immediate puking. There was another long night of continued diarrhea and throwing up. The kids threw up on me so many times, I could hardly keep myself dressed.

You don't let kids that small run from both ends for long without going to see the doctor. After two nights and an intervening day, we went to the pediatrician. We probably should have gone sooner. The pediatrician stated she recognized the virus, she had already seen many children with it. She wanted to put them in the hospital right away.

I said "They still breast feed. They can hold down breast milk." She agreed to let me take care of them at home as long as I followed her instructions exactly and brought them in for a recheck every single day.She told me I should plan on them ending up in the hospital.

I nursed them round the clock. I repeatedly offered them water until they could hold it down. As soon as they could drink water without throwing up, I alternated nursing them with giving them sips of water. Then, I added the foods in the exact order my pediatrician had specified. It's been many years now, but I think the first food was plain rice. I took them to the pediatrician every day. They never went to the hospital.

Finally, she declared them well and said "My G-d, you did it. We've got kids in the hospital on IV lines that aren't recuperating this well."
I asked her "Will you recommend long term nursing to other Moms as a way to support a toddlers' health now?"
The pediatrician: "No" and she started laughing. When I asked why not, she answered "Because you look like you've been dead and dehydrated for days."
Though I couldn't argue with that reasoning, I'm still glad I did it.

Now that the snark is out, how many of these moms that are breastfeeding their 5 and 6 year olds are following La Leche League and others advice that your child will stop on their own and are just waiting for that to happen.

They might have all sorts of strange rationalizations to justify it (and I've heard some doozies*), but at the core is this belief your child will self wean, rather than use it as an emotional control over mom.

*Strangest was a former friend that was bawling her eyes out because her oldest stopped breastfeeding at two, then she cried tears of joy that the oldest started again at 4 when she saw her baby sister breastfeeding and was jealous.

Their diagrams say up to 23 months. with solid (mashed) foods being introduced at 6 months

I'm aware. Saying that a baby shouldn't breastfeed after 6 months (the dawn of solid food) is effing retarded. And most people don't feed their babies for prolonged periods because they enjoy it, they do it because the BABY enjoys it.

So if a father offered a nipple to their 8 year old daughter... anyone here would be calling the police. At what point does it become kind of a weird sexual, incest thing? If its a woman with her 5, 6 or 8 year old son, we need to understand her.... Give her room to be a mother on her terms. Its just so weird.... What if dad bathed his daughter as a toddler and still is scrubbing away into her teens... honestly just doing honest to goodness bathing.. You're skin is crawling isn't it. A dad is a man and too sexual...a woman with a boy at her bare breast sucking away is OK because she is only in it for the nurturing.

Creepy, creepy, creepy.... Time to let those kids grow up, screwball. Once they are on slices of pizza, you've crossed that line for years already.

But as for a TV show idea... maybe they should combine it with celebrities. Movie Mommies for a Day. Sign me up when Jessica Alba has another kid. I would only want to do this because I was a bottle baby.. seriously. Should I go to my grave never knowing that bond, that closeness.. and with Jessica Alba...yoo hoo!

My wife plans on breast feeding our son until he's 2, currently he's 14 months. This seems to be the cutoff for her group of friends and their kids. She says she's researched it and determined that to be the best time. The doctor suggested that she stop when the kid is old enough to ask for it, but it does no harm to continue until 2 as planned. He's definitely asking for it. He knows a lot of basic sign language and some words and it's very clear what he wants and when he wants it.

Personally I think he eats enough solid foods and drinks enough liquids that he doesn't really need it anymore. I'm sure it's mostly just a comfort thing for him at this point. At first I was totally on board with waiting until 2, but he's so grown up now and maturing much faster than I thought he would.

Wow! How the hell did you get that from what I said?

Why do you think stopping breast feeding means he no longer gets any comfort of any kind?

This.

I think it would create confusion with a male child. I could see this ending like Oedipus Rex, sadly. Could be the reason some men grow up to have lactation or diaper fetishes.

When your kids have molars, or are old enough to ask for a boob, now you're doing it for yourself, not for your kid. I know it sheds a lot of weight/calories from a new mom's body, but come on. This is just a different version of helicopter parenting. Ugh.

My kid could say "boobie" at 6 months and had molars at 9 SOOOO.... your a farking idiot. Also, I was breastfed til. 3 and don't remember it at all and I do have other memories from before that. Breast feeding isn't a big deal to a child who has done it their whole life.

18 month olds also enjoy staying up late and eating sugary snacks and sleeping in their parents' bed and running an entire roll of toilet paper through the house and sneaking away to climb up on chairs, tables, stairs, and ladders, and grab dangerous objects off of tables and countertops and put small objects in their mouths. Some of these things are health and safety issues, and others are merely things. When you raise a kid, many issues have little to do with right or wrong, but a parent sets boundaries. Kids just want. Unnecessary breastfeeding is one more of those things (some) parents decide. Just keep them safe and smart and try not to turn your kid into a bad kind of weirdo.

I think your a bad kind of weirdo. How long were you breastfed?

Your wife is my hero. The only thing that got milk out of me was my kids. I even bought one of those crazy, expensive electric pumps: nothing. As long as the kids were well fed it usually didn't bother me, but when I read articles about some neo-natal unit receiving life saving donations of breast milk, I did feel a bit envious of those women who were fortunate enough to be able to share their milk with others.ThU

kiwimoogle84: Lunaville: Technoir: "Hello, Mother. If you would be so kind as to proffer your bosom for my snack satisfaction, I would be most appreciative of said lactation."

Rather than be dishonest via omission, I will confess that I nursed my children until they were four and five years old. This line, however, was hilarious. I think it may have been the funniest comment on the entire thread.

Then I have an honest question for you- why so late? I would think once you enroll them in t-ball and they're potty trained it would be over with the baby food. Really just curious, as it's relevant to the thread. I mean no disrespect, I just don't understand it. My niece only nursed a year before she wanted more interesting food and wouldn't nurse anymore.

I was convinced it would greatly benefit their health. I had read that children who were nursed until ages 4 to 6 years of age were more likely to have straight teeth, were less likely to have asthma, were more likely to have a higher than average IQ (due to trace nutrients received) and even that they were somewhat less likely, statistically speaking, to get leukemia.

My children did get fewer ear infections and minor colds and flu than their bottle fed peers in my family and community. Their baby teeth were perfect, but when the adult teeth began to come in, they were unbelievably crooked. I had never seen such a mess. I was disappointed.

By the time they were four and five, I was seriously ready to wean them, but they were showing no signs of self-weaning. A friend of mine confided that her son had been diagnosed with leukemia before he was weaned. She said "If you're still nursing these kids because you think you're keeping them from getting something like leukemia; go ahead and wean them and don't feel guilty about it."

So, I weaned them. At first it was awful, because they did not want to be weaned. And I knew Moms who had done the self-weaning thing who said things like "She came home from kindergarten one day and announced she didn't need to nurse anymore and that was that." But, these other women were nursing a single child. I was co-nursing two children. One, it had become exhausting. Two, I think sibling rivalry played a hand in their disdain for being weaned. If one was nursed, the other had to be nursed. Three, I began to fear that my son, the elder of the two, would expect to be nursed through college, if I didn't force him to wean. Interestingly, once my daughter realized I wasn't going to give in, she rapidly lost interest. My son made me feel guilty as only a little person can.

As for IQ, I don't know. They seem to have a healthy intelligence level. Much as with the teeth, I had hoped for some observable long term benefit. Specifically, I had hoped they would have a more natural proclivity in math than I did. I had read a few reports indicating that dysfunction in the ability to learn math might be due to subtle malnutrition. Supposedly, societies who predominantly breastfeed and breadtfeed longer than the USA have fewer diagnosed math learning disorders. Again, I was disappointed as one of my children struggles constantly with math. The teachers' description of his/her struggle with mathematics is gut-wrenchingly familiar. Actually, I have to leave now. I have to take them to math tutoring.
