Oh well thank you random person who doesn't know shiat and hasn't read the advice of the WHO.

The WHO says up to 23 months, they tack on a "and beyond" to not make women like this feel bad.

Their diagrams say up to 23 months. with solid (mashed) foods being introduced at 6 months

I'm aware. Saying that a baby shouldn't breastfeed after 6 months (the dawn of solid food) is effing retarded. And most people don't feed their babies for prolonged periods because they enjoy it, they do it because the BABY enjoys it.

This.

I think it would create confusion with a male child. I could see this ending like Oedipus Rex, sadly. Could be the reason some men grow up to have lactation or diaper fetishes.

When your kids have molars, or are old enough to ask for a boob, now you're doing it for yourself, not for your kid. I know it sheds a lot of weight/calories from a new mom's body, but come on. This is just a different version of helicopter parenting. Ugh.

18 month olds also enjoy staying up late and eating sugary snacks and sleeping in their parents' bed and running an entire roll of toilet paper through the house and sneaking away to climb up on chairs, tables, stairs, and ladders, and grab dangerous objects off of tables and countertops and put small objects in their mouths. Some of these things are health and safety issues, and others are merely things. When you raise a kid, many issues have little to do with right or wrong, but a parent sets boundaries. Kids just want. Unnecessary breastfeeding is one more of those things (some) parents decide. Just keep them safe and smart and try not to turn your kid into a bad kind of weirdo.

So if a father offered a nipple to their 8 year old daughter... anyone here would be calling the police. At what point does it become kind of a weird sexual, incest thing? If its a woman with her 5, 6 or 8 year old son, we need to understand her.... Give her room to be a mother on her terms. Its just so weird.... What if dad bathed his daughter as a toddler and still is scrubbing away into her teens... honestly just doing honest to goodness bathing.. You're skin is crawling isn't it. A dad is a man and too sexual...a woman with a boy at her bare breast sucking away is OK because she is only in it for the nurturing.

Creepy, creepy, creepy.... Time to let those kids grow up, screwball. Once they are on slices of pizza, you've crossed that line for years already.

But as for a TV show idea... maybe they should combine it with celebrities. Movie Mommies for a Day. Sign me up when Jessica Alba has another kid. I would only want to do this because I was a bottle baby.. seriously. Should I go to my grave never knowing that bond, that closeness.. and with Jessica Alba...yoo hoo!

My wife plans on breast feeding our son until he's 2, currently he's 14 months. This seems to be the cutoff for her group of friends and their kids. She says she's researched it and determined that to be the best time. The doctor suggested that she stop when the kid is old enough to ask for it, but it does no harm to continue until 2 as planned. He's definitely asking for it. He knows a lot of basic sign language and some words and it's very clear what he wants and when he wants it.

Personally I think he eats enough solid foods and drinks enough liquids that he doesn't really need it anymore. I'm sure it's mostly just a comfort thing for him at this point. At first I was totally on board with waiting until 2, but he's so grown up now and maturing much faster than I thought he would.

FTFA: "Extreme Parenting will look at a range of America's kookiest parenting rituals, shedding a spotlight further on the much-hyped arguments for and against weaning your child after the age of one."

FTWHO: "WHO strongly recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. At six months, other foods should complement breastfeeding for up to two years or more. In addition:
-breastfeeding should begin within an hour of birth;
-breastfeeding should be "on demand", as often as the child wants day and night; and
-bottles or pacifiers should be avoided. "

That kooky WHO. But then they use science and whatnot and Fark doesn't buy all that sciency-y nonsense. You BIE-obsessed wonders are somehow mortified at the omnipresent spectre of titties being "whipped out" all over the place. The world is truly a terrifying place.

Think about this statement for a moment. When your 14-month-old wakes up in tears from a bad dream or because of a thunderstorm, do you tell him to STFU and be a man? No? Anything else is just placating his infantile need for "comfort." And don't even tell me that immature brat still likes hugs before you leave for work!

Actually, we're quite happy with that. We just don't like having to compete with toddlers. Toddlers are much cuter than we are.

Exactly this! It IS creepy, and once a kid can recognize a boob AS a boob, and not just that thing that food comes out of, they're old enough to be taught about special no no places, as it were. It's not like Mommy can come to school to give him a suckle on kindergarten recess, and I think it stunts development. The kid is being treated like a baby when he needs to start doing things average for the age group.

Can you not provide adequate comfort and reassurance without sticking a tit in the kid's mouth?

'Boob Suckers' would work just fine but may conflict with a reality show about politicians' mistresses.

baska: Can you not provide adequate comfort and reassurance without sticking a tit in the kid's mouth?

If nursing is suddenly inappropriate for comforting a child, then why should any other childish comfort be appropriate? For the record, I cannot comfort a child with my breast as I'm a guy. I've lived with a breastfeeding wife for the last five years (across three kids) and have seen:
1. Nothing remotely creepy nor sexual between mother and child (including our many friends that nursed their kids)
2. No "whipping out" of anything in public and even rarely in private
3. No strange behavior as a result of having weaned after 12 months of age, nor any particular air of indulgence at offering the same.

It is just so strange to see the terror with which seemingly reasonable farkers react to the thought of a 15-month-old nursing. I mean, the AWs on here that use their titties to get farkers to buy them things off their Amazon wishlists I understand; their relationship with their tits is a uniquely commercial one. But man there's a whole lot of breathless fear of nursing on this site.

I'd like to offer a tip of the cap to those that suggested "American Suckers," "Jugrats," and "Battlestar Lactica" however. Those were good.

My kid could say "boobie" at 6 months and had molars at 9 SOOOO.... your a farking idiot. Also, I was breastfed til. 3 and don't remember it at all and I do have other memories from before that. Breast feeding isn't a big deal to a child who has done it their whole life.

Long enough to to have received the special breast milk nutirents that provide the capacity to learn the difference between "your" and "you're"?

I honestly don't know, but considering where I am in my family and how close we all are in age and my weight growing up, I'd be surprised if I was fed at all. And I like to think I'm a good kind of weirdo - like more Al Yankovic and less Tom Cruise. Unless it turns out Weird Al is a child molester, in which case I'd be unwillingly more like Tom Cruise. Gross.
