The whole idea really is idiotic. Once your kid starts eating solid food, they no longer need to be breastfeeding, and any extension on that is simply to placate the mother's insecurities.

You're done when they don't need it anymore. But if you choose to continue, don't whip them out in Panera and then glare at me for being a man in your general vicinity. I'm more scared of you than you are of me. And I'm already looking the other way, but now I can tell every woman is mad at me for being a man near a breastfeeding woman. Actually, that applies even if you have an infant that requires the benefits of breastfeeding. (yeah, CSB it happened to me a few months ago.)

And the best part was that I was alone, but had an infant son and my wife was breastfeeding during that time period ...if you've been in that situation, you know that having recently witnessed childbirth plus watching your wife breastfeed plus sleeping less than 15 hours a week makes you the opposite of viewing breasts as a sexual object.
/Women be all crazy.

Men are programmed to be sexually stimulated by breasts. It's the most natural thing in the world. You might want to remember that when you are breast feeding your 5 year old.

Now that the snark is out, how many of these moms that are breastfeeding their 5 and 6 year olds are following La Leche League and others advice that your child will stop on their own and are just waiting for that to happen.

They might have all sorts of strange rationalizations to justify it (and I've heard some doozies*), but at the core is this belief your child will self wean, rather than use it as an emotional control over mom.

*Strangest was a former friend that was bawling her eyes out because her oldest stopped breastfeeding at two, then she cried tears of joy that the oldest started again at 4 when she saw her baby sister breastfeeding and was jealous.

The WHO says up to 23 months, they tack on a "and beyond" to not make women like this feel bad.

Their diagrams say up to 23 months. with solid (mashed) foods being introduced at 6 months
