RTFA, submitter. It wasn't the NHS doing this, but the woman's own doctor's office that sent her the letter.

Two miles isn't an insignificant distance. There may be a Farmer's Market along the way.

It's Britain. They think 100 miles is a long way, like Americans think 100 years is a long time.

Yeah, I wish car insurance wasn't mandated so it would cost $5,000 per year to insure a car because only responsible people and those who can afford it purchased it reducing the pool and making it more expensive.

Just admit that you assholes suck at math and be done with it. It's a financial matter, not a social matter. The gubmint ain't stealing your rights. They are trying to make civilized society more affordable so you jackasses don't cost us thousands when you shout "Hold mah beer and watch this!"

Just shut the hell up already. You're arguing against conservative economics that actually increases the spending power of the consumer. Go sit in the corner and think about how stupid that is.

Britain is somewhat larget than Rhode Island -- two miles is still a short drive there.

Personally, I'd be concerned about her driving anywhere. She's 83 years old and there's a good chance that her vision, hearing and reflexes aren't up to snuff.

If only there was some form of transportation that she could use, where a professional driver would go on a specific route, at an appointed time. It could even be public, and very inexpensive.

Honestly, if British medicine (and dentistry) is as much of a horrorshow as conservatives like to say it is, what does it say about us when our life expectancy at birth is about 8 months less than the average Brit?

LOL, god damn you are dumb. First... State Police Powers. It's not a federal mandate. Second, car insurance can be cheap because you aren't covering tire rotations, oil changes, tire changes, car washes, etc with car insurance. Sebelius wants everything provided in the BASIC healthcare plan, therefore the basic plan is expensive. Third, emergency care for uninsured accounts for roughly 3-5% of healthcare costs. The costs passed to private plans from Medicare/aid underpaying add roughly 8%... hmm... yes, it's the first one that's the problem.

Increases spending power? How? Every plan is now the same. Young and Healthy can't choose high deductible plans with HSAs. It's just more subsidizing of the old by the young. God you are ignorant.

Why are you arguing in favor of mandated health insurance, from for profit companies no less, when the article is about a single payer system?

Because if SCOTUS upholds the Affordable Care Act, that is what we're left with.

The argument is being made to compare NHS with Obamacare which is total bullsh*t. I'm arguing about the facts of the matter.

I totally did. Everything is socialism's fault. Socialism is why Zach Galifianakis is Generation Y's Pauly Shore. Socialism is why that old fat guy in your neighborhood revs the shiat out of his Harley with open pipes at 4 AM. Socialism is why Los Angeles passed that mandatory condoms in porn law. Socialism is everything bad, and nothing good.

In England you can have private health insurance in addition to NHS coverage. Private insurance that covers everything, with not much in the way of deductibles, can be had for about $1900, a year .In other words, we're doing it wrong.
