Any idea why I'm getting a 404 Not Found for Farktography.com?

Am I the only one, or is there something wrong?

Not exactly, no. The domain is still registered through October, so we're covered there. Our hosting provider is having some issues and we're trying to work through things. Sorry for the extended outage, folks.

Farktography.net is back up.

Sorry about the clusterfark. While the initial outage was the fault of my shaky finances, the extended down time was 1and1.com being unresponsive and incompetent. After several years with them, this is the final straw and I will be moving to different hosting in coming months..

I know what you mean. The only reason i got the houses in Toronto is they are designated heritage buildings and that usually takes some time (read money) to get permission to demo them.

BTW, I forgot to thank Elsinore and Lord Ezekiel for pitching in money to help pay the hosting bill again.

I have raised the possibility of moving Farktography.net over to Lord Ezekiel's hosting some time in the coming year, as I can't currently make any guarantees to be a good hosting sponsor to the site in recent years.

I have trouble imagining anyone has a problem with that, but since the original arrangement was that I was at arm's length and not taking part in the Farktog community or its governance, community members who wish to bring up concerns of control or accountability should do so within the community first, but can always do so directly to me. E-mail in profile. I've no interest in mediating trivial bickering, appealing timeouts for stupid shiat or sponsoring your personal aspirations to power, however :)

Anytime, man :)

I suspect most of our current crop of regulars have no real knowledge of the original arrangement of Farktography.net, though there should be reference to it in the history thread I have posted over there.  tl;dr version is that once upon a time the original Farktography site was registered to someone who was a regular Farktographer and site moderator (non-Fark mod).  He had a disagreement with the other folks running the show, and since he owned the site, he took his ball and went home, shutting down everything.  All the site stuff was lost, game over man, nuked from orbit.  Another Farktographer asked Procedural_Texture if he'd host the new site, which, given he wasn't part of the Farktography community, there would be less chance of any further flounce-driven site shut downs.  Procedural_Texture has been our quiet benefactor lo these many years, but it's one more thing on an already full plate, so if we can clear that for him, that would be good.

So is there a way to make snapshots of the site, that farktography as a group can have access to? People could then choose to copy it to their local HDD's and if in the future there is either a technical, personal or financial problem someone new could pick up the standard and carry on. A kind of "open source" farktography.

That would be a question more for Lord Ezekiel, just from a technology/feasibility standpoint, but I think we'd be open to anything that's feasible and that doesn't compromise basic site security.

The site already is open source. We're running an out of the box Zikula framework with zphpbb for the forums. Previously, we had been running OpenStar, which was a PostNuke CMS with a number of included modules. (PostNuke was renamed Zikula).

The secret sauce, so to speak, is in the database contents. The problem is, that's where all the user names, passwords, email addresses, security settings, private messages, etc are... and if I give you a copy of the database without it, it's kinda useless because you have no way of verifying who belongs to what user IDs unless the DB includes all the security bits.

We do have a nightly job that fires off to archive the site and database... I just need to build in a way to get the backups off the machine on a nightly basis; in the event anything gets honked on the site, I can stand a copy here at the house, on an EC2 session, etc. If we set it up, it can kinda be like beerspill.fark.com -- ordinarily it doesn't have much other than a status, but all the necessary bits are there... just in case of a failure at the primary hosting.

I wasn't aware of the history of the forums.  Interesting.  And a bit sad, in a "why can't we all just get along" way.   Does that also explain why it's "dot net" and why "someone" is trying to sell the dot com version for $600 on GoDaddy?

Procedural Texture, thanks so much for being our silent benefactor for so many years!  I don't do any of the other social media, so the farktography forums are really my only online social gathering site (my wife even calls it my "facebook") and while it's a really small thing in the grand scheme of life, I've certainly enjoyed my time there.

Lord Ezekiel, I've got an "unlimited" hosting package at GoDaddy.  I host a handful of my own sites there so I don't see it going away in the near or even not-so-near future.  It's Windows hosting, but it  supports PHP 5.3.  Anyway, you're more than welcome to consider that when looking for a future home for the forums.  I don't want anything to do with forum maintenance/oversight/administration (I can't seem to get to all the stuff I want to do on my own sites), but I'd be happy to provide the hosting.

Yeah, it was definitely sad, and a punch in the gut to the community at the time.  Lord Ezekiel and I are not flouncers by nature, but in all our years of moderating and admin'ing various sites, games, and communities, we've run across plenty of those folks.  And yes, the original site was dot com, so I guess someone thinks it's worth something now.  I don't see why anyone would pay that, but whatevs.

What's funny is there are also sites out there that rate and provide a valuation on the domain name. Both the .com and .net domains are worth somewhere just north of dick.

GoDaddy is our hosting provider as well for a couple other communities that Elsinore and I support. The only thing that has annoyed me is that to re-up for my existing package will cost twice as much as buying a new hosting package and moving. So, I'm buying a new hosting package and moving ;)  Thanks for the offer though!

Sure, but my broken ankle was the only thing I came away with from that holiday, having being robbed of everything else.

Out of interest, If I'd posted the pic of my foot in the 'aircast' that I got from the local hospital, would that have been tangible enough?

Not being snarky - I'm aware of contest limitations, and try to adhere as best I can, and think you mods do a superb job of keeping everyone on track!! :-)

Hello

I tried to register on farktography.net to able to participate in the forums since I started participating in the farktography contests. But I have not received and messages confirming my registration. I now read that the farktography.net site is in some kind of transition based on recent posts here. Should I expect a confirmation for my registration? Was it denied? Should I try again because the first one got lost on the interwebs?

Anyways, great to be here, and this forum is operational, just wasn't sure what I was perhaps missing out on over at farktography.net...
