Norway, err, surrenders.
2001-11-10 04:52:20 AM
This is bogus Norway doesn't have a space program.
2001-11-10 05:55:38 AM
Paranormal news? I bet this came from Ms. Cleo.
2001-11-10 06:00:16 AM
Farking Lurker: Me'thinks you may be correct in this story's bogus qualities. My main discrepancy is a simple question? Whom in the Russian government could've possibly given the supposed Norwegian space program or Norwegian government permission to use Russian airspace to launch a satellite that wouldn't have been notified of an impending nuclear response.

Whomever had the power to give Norway use of Russian airspace would've been questioned by the Russian military of knowledge of activity in Russian airspace, even AFTER they thought it was an ICBM. Besides, many government officials would've been aware of the satellite launch, not just one. There is almost NO way this could've gotten to such a critical point in Russia. At least not as critical as this article states it was: "The ominous countdown began and preparations for a fatal strike continued. President Yeltsin was given the keys to his nuclear briefcase and made preparations to launch thermal nuclear weapons and plunge the planet into World War III."
2001-11-10 06:00:37 AM
Nope, it's real, the "missile" was a sounding rocket used for atmospheric research...

2001-11-10 06:30:22 AM
The source is less than credible. Somehow I have a hard time believing that the reporters at Paranormal News scooped the entire world on this story.
2001-11-10 06:41:36 AM
Yeah, sounds like crap.

However, there was a good, slightly similar story in a Maxim a few months back. It was about the fire in New Mexico, near the Los Alamos nuclear lab. If that baby had caught on fire....whew, I'd be gone. I lived in El Paso, which is about 60 miles away. Well, I'd be here, but I'd probably be on my way to a quivering puddle of shiat with radiation sickness.
2001-11-10 06:47:56 AM
What I would like to know is:"What Farken Difference Does It Make Now"for shiat sake....there is going to be WWIII real soon so who gives a fark about back then...they are the BUT'S,WHAT IF'S,COULD HAVE,MIGHT HAVE....this is the Real Mcoy...
2001-11-10 06:55:53 AM
Ozzie_Pride: The difference it makes now is all in how the Russian government has changed it's SOP's (Standard Operating Procedures) on nuclear retaliation. They should've learned something from it, and they probably did.

However, I still can't believe that this went as far as the story claims it did. Don't get me wrong...Yeltsin having the nuke keys in his hand as soon as some word came around is NOT unimaginable. He probably did. However, they article makes it sound as if he had the key in the ignition (as if he'd actually fire them himself) and was called off SECONDS before he was gonna turn the key.

Sure, it's likely that plenty of things have made a country think it was being attacked by nuclear ICBM's. But those thoughts were quickly quelled, I'm sure.

Yes but my point is that it says ALMOST CAUSED...geeezzz I am more worried about what is going to happen in this world than what could have happend in the past.
Just my thoughts no big deal...and maybe I am wrong yet again,I live for today as there might not be a tomorrow and the past is behind me.

"thermal nuclear" weapons?
2001-11-10 07:11:32 AM
I think the story is hyped up for dramatic reading.
2001-11-10 07:16:36 AM
your right 3M TA3,yesterdays news....and I am just tired...lol....so why not just let my frustrations out on FARK...

I am still stuck on the viking astronaut image.

2001-11-10 08:10:59 AM
luckly yeltsin was drunk at the time
2001-11-10 08:18:31 AM
this is pretty old news... but it was scary at the time, for sure. it's been in Norwegian papers plenty of times.
2001-11-10 08:24:48 AM
to reiterate DOSman, writers who talk about "thermal nuclear weapons" don't strike me as being the most informed as to their subject. This story was covered ad nauseum when it was fresh, before these goofs misrepresented facts and events.
2001-11-10 09:23:43 AM
How can it be a hoax? The source is clearly identified as AFP!
2001-11-10 09:38:14 AM
It is a true story, the main problem was the fact that the Soviet Military used to have control of the space program as well as the nuclear program. After the breakup of the soviet union lines of communication between the two programs came down because civilians took over the space program and did not see the need to tell the military anything.
2001-11-10 09:55:59 AM
I think '3M TA3' hit it right on the nose.
2001-11-10 09:58:49 AM
I saw that on NOVA last Friday. They were showing off Russia's shiatty missle system and mentioned two happenings that nearly caused WWIII, the other was a reflection on a radan that looked like 5 fighter jets.
2001-11-10 10:06:54 AM
This is a true story, I rember it pretty good as I live in Norway. I'll see if I can dig up some other source.

The missle as far as I can remember was sent from Andøya through the rocket range program http://www.rocketrange.no/

The rocket that was fired was a Black Brant XII .

AHHH finally . Here is the summery from rocketrange on the launch. It says nothing on the problem since the focus is on the scientific http://www.rocketrange.no/campaigns/completed/scifer/scifer.html

If we do not learn from the past, we are doomed to repeat it.

Frankly, the damn Soviets/Russians have always had an itchy trigger finger. When the Soviet Union fell and they declassified a lot of their papers, we got to see how crazy they really act.

The only way they thought they could defend their boarders in the far east, was with nuclear weapons. As the Soviet Union began to crumble, they initiated a strike-first policy to handle any border trouble. In other words, if you farked with them, they were gonna nuke you off the god damn planet. I suppose they just liked signing arms treaties to test out new pens.
2001-11-10 10:31:07 AM
Makes for an interesting 6th grade creative writing project. But the doomsday scenario they paint makes some fairly credulous assumptions about the Russian military and government's reaction to an unusual event. It seems highly unlikely that Yeltsin would have believed in a surprise nuclear attack by the US.
2001-11-10 10:33:41 AM
all nuclear weapons are thermal

I heard if it wasn't for Wil Wheaton we would have all been doomed.

Even if it is true, it's not paranormal.
2001-11-10 12:01:30 PM
I heard France surrendered even before the 'war' began.

This incident is covered in much more detail by the Federation of American Scientists at:

I remember reading this in every mayor norwegian newspaper at the time, and I can confirm it's true.

And on behalf of all norwegians, I'd like to say we're almost sorry we almost caused WWIII.

Also it is said that then current russian pres Boris was drunk off his arse...
2001-11-10 02:10:57 PM
One of the reasons for the russian reaction was that the "Black Brant" rocket is based around a bunch of surplus military missile motors. The reuslt is that the ascending rocket produces signatures (radar, thermal, flight characteristics, etc.) that are similar or identical to that of the missile that the motor was originaly part of.

Black Brant XII is a four stage, 65' tall, 11,000 lb solid rocket. It uses Talos, Taurus, Black Brant V, and Nihka
motors for the four stages. The first two stages are military missile motors.

The Talos is a suface-to-air missle designed to use both
nuke and conventional warheads. My understanding is that the Taurus rocket is, I think, a converted Peacekeeper ICBM.

The last two stages are from Bristol Aerospace in CANADA. Blame CANADA. Boobies.

Uff Da! Ve don' have a space program!
2001-11-10 03:51:50 PM
Actually, Norway does have a space program, unmanned, but it does launch satleites, and when this happened, Yeltsin was rushed to a bunker, and gave the order to retaliate. it was about an hour and a half before they would have launched that they found out the mistake. we werent 'seconds' away, but we were probally as close to nuclear disaster as we were in the cuban missle crisis, and there Kennady had authorized nukes to be launched in 2 hours befgore it was finally sorted out

4 or 5 months ago, i saw this hour long show on TLC, on all the close calls
turns out the states have been in about 5 or 6 close calls, just like this, just in the last 30 years

DrRachet> don't knock canada, we'll bottle rocket your ass!
2001-11-10 04:26:59 PM
Heh, you Canadians with your flapping heads... :^)
2001-11-10 04:47:45 PM
I may be wrong, but (modern, rational) world leaders generally don't ignore common sense and current events when dealing with sketchy situtions. What, did yeltsin say "oh my, forget us aid and improved relations, they musta decided to obliterate us"

Sure, they went on alert, but i doubt they were thinking "retaliate on the US".
2001-11-10 04:53:16 PM
I love Norway.

--Stupid random comment that has nothing to do with anything.--
2001-11-10 06:27:59 PM
Too bad; my defense stocks would have gone through the roof if they had started WWIII.
2001-11-11 12:54:00 AM
I knew it was the Norwegians all along! I just knew they were up to something!
2001-11-11 03:09:52 AM
I think all of these 'close call' stories always get blown out of proportion. It's happened 'quite a bit' (at least 5-10 times) in the past, so obvisouly the procedures aren't quite as 'crazy' as they are made out to be because there has never actually been a nuclear holocaust.

I mean, it's a little unsettling to know that we've been close, but close isn't there.
