It is pretty crazy that he went ahead of Durant, but it's only so often that a dominant center comes around. Which I think Oden would have been had he not been a constant injury waiting to happen. Really sad to see him not even get a chance.

He was not that dominant in College. His basketball skills were limited. He was just stronger than most centers he encountered while playing for OSU.

Well yeah, but he had time to learn. One of those "you can't teach size/strength" cliches. Ideally he would have stayed in college longer and developed but that doesn't make much sense when people are projecting you to go #1 anyway.

Or maybe you just didn't realize that Portland had a couple of really great young players in Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge that would have complimented Oden's game perfectly. In hindsight, yeah, everybody would have taken Durant. At the time, I don't think there were too many teams that would have taken him over Oden.

Exactly why it doesn't make much sense to stay. He wasn't going to do any better, even if the extra time at college* would have helped. Strangely I felt the opposite way about Andrew Luck last year.

Yep. Outside of the Bulls, all of the "dynasty" type teams peppered through NBA history had dominant hall of fame bigs(they had the best rebounder in history, instead). The league almost requires it with the slow halfcourt play in the playoffs.

Also, Oden was WAY more polished than Thabeet, who went 2 overall two years later and has bounced back and forth from the D League

As far as body, one of the upsides I've heard about Blake Griffin is that his body is built to handle his actual size, so he shouldn't have the types of chronic issues that people like Oden have

As far as teams go, you're probably right. Most of the media seemed convinced that Oden was the next Shaq; ESPN in particular was hammering that "You have to take the franchise big man" line. Hell some of them probably still stick by it, despite the fact that Durant is like the second best pure scorer in the league.

But there was just something about Oden, watching him on the court, everything seemed like such a struggle for him physically. Even in those games when he was dominating, it just seemed to come in slow motion, disjointed. Someone mentioned Thabeet, I thought he had a better chance to turn into a solid starting center than Oden, just because his body seemed more naturally built.

Renegotiated after he learned of his latest surgery, so he's only making $1.5 million instead of $8 million and he's an unrestricted FA after this season. Can't wait for Michael Jordan to give him a long-term deal to play (or ride the bench, really) for the Bobcats. You know it will happen.

The thing about Prior is that he was praised coming out of college for his 'flawless' mechanics. He had a couple of fluke injuries that probably threw off his mechanics in the '03 and '04 seasons.

/and a bad pitching coach who wanted him to do the (infamous to Cubs fans) 'towel drill' for rehab

As a long-time Blazer fan, I'll tell you why Oden was picked over Durant: image.

The Blazers were *just* coming out of their "Jailblazers" period, and the franchise wanted to represent a clean-cut image. And Oden was as straight-laced as they come while Durant had some behavioral issues in college.

Of course, that's all long-forgotten as Durant's been a good player and teammate while Oden's riding the bench while pictures he regrets being taken are showing up everywhere.

But at the time, five years ago, it seemed like a good call. I can't blame them even if it looks idiotic in hindsight.

Bowie over Jordan I will never, ever understand. Portland was looking for another Bill Walton when they should have been looking for... well, a Michael Jordan.

He had flawless mechanics because retards thought that scapular loading and high arms was the end all be all for pitching mechanics They were teaching the scapular loading with the elbows being higher than the shoulders. That is entirely the wrong way to do it. Overtime, people learned that an entire generation of pitchers were getting their arms destroyed in high school and early college because they were taught wrong.

Examples of scapular loading with elbows below shoulder height: Greg Maddux, Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson
Examples of scapular loading with elbows above shoulder height: Strasbourg, Prior, Billy Wagner, Joel Zumaya

One of the above groups produced a thousand MLB wins over 70 years worth of career with no major arm trouble. The other group has produced less than 20 years of experience with a dozen different arm/shoulder surgeries.

While I don't see him as angrily yelling at Westbrook to sit the f*ck down and let him run the show, Durant has shown a pention for yelling at teammates in huddles and for asserting himself as THE star on that team.

And, come on, that franchise is built on Durant. Freaking OKC is a title contender. They have some solid players surrounding them, but that team has a legit shot of winning the title and that is all KD.

Plus, the guy has one of the greatest nicknames I've heard....The Durantula.

I still make jokes about Durant being unable to bench 185lbs. It happens every year, more and more examples that demonstrate how experts are unable to evaluate who will be a breakout star, and overemphasize physical attributes. Character trumps talent every single time.

I don't recall what the Blazers lineup looked like before the Oden/Durant draft, but taking Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan probably made just as much or more sense at the time.

The Blazers had all-star Jim Paxson and a second year player named Clyde Drexler to play shooting guard. And, they had just traded for a forward. Jordan wouldn't have had anywhere to play. You would've been left with Drexler and Jordan competing for minutes at the same position.

Meanwhile, they were playing in a division that needed a big man inside for defense to go up against Kareem.

They drafted to fill the one need that they thought they needed.

Besides, nobody freaking knew Jordan would be the GOAT. Come on. Hell, the Bulls were even thinking about trading the pick for a center. It wasn't like he was showing off future 6 championship talent at UNC.

My favorite scenario from that draft, having just read (most of) Simmons' book, was the rumor that Portland was looking into/rumored to be interested in trading their #2 and Drexler for Ralph Sampson, which would've given Houston Olajuwon, Drexler, and Jordan.

He was selected simply because he was the best center in the draft, even though he wasn't that great a center. I kept arguing to anyone that would listen that you pick the best player in the draft with the #1 pick or you deal that pick for a bunch of other picks. In other words, you get *value* for the #1 pick, you don't squander it on a known gamble like Bowie.

The problem was that everyone was still mourning Walton's feet and wanted another guy just like him, and blinded themselves to Bowie's shortcomings. So they went with him.

I'm not always right about picks - I thought Sabonis was a wasted pick when the Blazers drafted him, and then the world changed and they got a good player out of it. But I will go to my grave saying I knew Bowie was a dud from the word "go".

The summer of 1977 is still one of my fondest memories of childhood. I was twelve years old when the whole city went absolutely bonkers. I'm fairly certain I'll never experience that again. I hope the Blazers can find that mix that gets them back on top of the world. Oden might have gotten them there, if only.

Christ, had to go and remind me that he's still on the Rocket's roster. With him, Terrance Williams, Johnny Flynn and Jordan Hill, the only one of value from that draft that is on the roster is Chase Budinger, who I like and wish would take that next step to being a good starter.

That's right folks, 4 of the top 11 picks in the 09 draft are all on the Houston roster, and the other guy was picked in the 2nd round (Budinger) after Morey bought the pick from the Pistons.

Yeah, you can see why I am little faith in the Rockets. But hey, Morey is a GM Mastermind, and they have about 10 primed young role players to send off in a major trade...the answer is...when?

Brandon Roy, also drafted high by the Blazers, had to retire at 26 because of knee problems. Also LaMarcus Aldridge, their current star, has Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which is a rare and potentially lethal heart condition. So yea, somebody's farking with the Blazers.

Two months ago in the Paul trade?

I've said I didn't like the Gasol deal only b/c it was bringing in another soft 31 year old PF. Yeah he won titles, but putting the team on his back? But it came to light that it was a done deal for Nene to come to Houston b/c of the Gasol deal. That would have changed things drastically. Yeah yeah, that would have meant Lin was on the roster, blah blah blah.

I don't mean to bash Morey, only b/c he's done a real good job since he's came to the Rockets on working with what they have, especially when it was the McGrady and Yao injury show. He did work some magic on the cap where half of it was for two guys not even suiting up.

But, it's year 3 on this "Gathering pieces for a big deal", and yeah, Stern pulled some mobster shiat and pushed his weight around in that deal, but what's done is done.
