I didn't necessarily agree with the order, but I had no real issues (King Kong came close to pushing me over the edge) but Piss Off! Cloverfield shouldn't even be sniffing the top 1000's jockstrap, let alone make it in at 394.

Funny how much cultural norms affect criticism. And yet again the English show they're more egalitarian than Americans. Good luck finding an American critic who'd say a John Hughes movie can count among the 100 best of all time. Just goes to show that taste is completely subjective and arguing over terms like masterpiece or great is just pointless prattle and better to let people just like what they like.

It wasn't a "moose head" and not knowing this disqualifies you from making a "top" movie list...especially one that contains "Evil Dead II".

I'm just pleased to see that some foreign films are represented (and not just the pretentious artsy ones). Oldboy at #64 was surprising, but pleasantly so. As mentioned before, the placement of many films on a list like this is pretty subjective, but the author seemed to catch many of the films I would have in my top X-hundred.

kyuzokai: I'm just pleased to see that some foreign films are represented


Funny what happens to a best movies list when its from a country where the term foreign movie includes American movies and other foreign movies are shown in wide release regularly.

This list is pretty much bullshiat with Fight Club in the top 10 -- not that it's not a great movie, but come on.

I'm not even going to bother wasting my time on the rest of this shiat.

Wings of Desire ought to be on any real 500 best list.

Empire has been around for ages and is a movie magazine. There's really nothing like it in the States. It doesn't really bother with creating some different between a movie, to them a movie is a movie, unlike with American magazines they don't look down at comedies or sci fi movies.

List needs Cable Guy, Trading Places, and Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Most my other favorites are on the list, not necessarily in the order they should be.

Groundhog Day rated way too low at 259.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles not even on the list.
And as pointed out, no Blazing Saddles or Young Frankenstein.

It's no worse than any other list, and might actually be better because it doesn't bother with any sense of ranking movies by how "serious" or "important" they are. Also keep in mind, to the English movies are foreign movies. They have a far different idea of what constitutes a proper American movie than Americans do. Which is different still from what the French think constitutes the same.

I don't care too much about the numerical ranking. Is No Country for Old Men really one placeholder better than Festen? I don't know and don't care.They are two diametrically different films.

What grinds my gears is that they included (or shall I say "sprinkled") a couple of Tarkovsky films in there because that's what serious film reviewers should do, right? Trouble is, they placed Andre Rublev pretty high on the list and didn't include Stalker at all. I mean, COME ON, MAN! The only reason they added Solaris is because Soderbergh saw fit to remake it in 2002 with George Clooney, so I guess we better put that one up there, eh?

Dicks.

/Kaydanovskiy was the bomb in Stalker, yo!

Well, I suppose it does get props for not listing the top grossing movie of all time ANYWHERE on the list.

It's weird how we'll put up a fight over their choices, but completely overlook how utterly pretentious it is for a magazine to deem themselves as being the authority worthy to rank which films are the greatest of all time.

You could probably argue TPM isn't quite as bad a film as the haters like to claim, but to rank it as better than masterpieces like Ikiru, The Deer Hunter and Glengarry Glen Ross? I doubt even George Lucas would be willing to claim that.

This is pretty clearly a troll list, designed to illicit the exact sort of attention this thread is giving it.

"Pretentious-artsy" my ass. For the past 80 or so years, the American mode of cinema has dominated the world. You're a foreign filmmaker trying to establish an artistic identity, what do you do, do you try to emulate the economic & cultural juggernaut that is Hollywood, or do you set off to find your own unique voice?

Any movie that you currently enjoy in theaters has stolen from at least a handful of breakthroughs made by pretentious-arty foreign (or domestic) filmmakers who had the leeway to experiment with narratives/aesthetics that Hollywood directors didn't have.

/not that Hollywood films don't have their strengths as well
