I am pretty sure that you do not mean a certain and friendly, brotherly grip whereby one may know another in the dark as well as in the light....

The Illuminati, you say? Long-standing secret order? Rules the world? The one some say was founded my Adam Weishaupt back in 1776?

Nope, Never heard of them.

Thorndyke Barnhard: I have to admit that my prejudice about societies or clubs like this is that it is merely to foster cronyism and predispositions to group exclusivity (like a sort of micro-ethnocentrism). I realize this has to be an oversimplification given the long history of groups like the massons so I wonder if you could help me understand the purpose and benefit of a society like the freemasons.

Think of Masonry as a social club with charitable leanings.

People get freaked out by the lack of sharing certain aspects of the organization, but the important stuff isn't the handshakes and words used behind closed doors, it's the kids that get free treatment at burn hospitals or access to books and tutoring at learning centers. The Shriner's burn hospitals and York Rite learning centers are reasonably well known public charity faces of the overall Masonic world and represent the true benefit. The rest is just a social club structure that supports and fosters the type of thinking and behavior that makes such charity possible.

Build a bear workshop is an elaborate scheme to indoctrinate well to do suburban children into child labor for when the libertarians finally get their way and deregulate everything and our children wind up making cheap crap for Chinese walmarts for pennies a day.
