Sometimes, I really like Google. The rest of the time, I just kind of like Google.

I thought Stupid Google Tricks was old news?

Not that I'm complaining, because anything light hearted to start the drudgery of another day at work is fine with me, but why do Google do these things? Is it simply to be entertaining in a small way, or are they actually doing something bigger, that I can't see?

2012-01-31 6:49:47 AM
I can never get these things to work for me. All it does is go to the search results, as soon as I start typing. What am I doing wrong?

Slaxl: but why do Google do these things? Is it simply to be entertaining in a small way, or are they actually doing something bigger, that I can't see?

I like to think they just do it because it's nifty and they enjoy it. They seem to have that kind of corporate culture, at least for their developers. Kind of like the old days when it wasn't a big deal for programmers to throw easter eggs into software (like the Apple brickout game, the Photoshop electric cat, etc.)

I also get normal search results. I assume it's because I have javascript off, in part to avoid annoying graphical effects.

I don't know if it is still true, but, I recall that at one point Google allowed 20% of workers company time per week to be spent on their own projects (I believe obviously still tied to Google products, but, they could be anything they want, not just things assigned to them). So, I would guess stuff like this falls into that.

Word of advice: Don't google "ass cue".

Unless you are into that sort of thing, of course.

It's quite nefarious, actually. They are in cohoots with world governments for the passivation of the populous. Little experiments like this are designed to identify paranoids and malcontents by their reaction, so they can be given the extra attention they deserve.

Indeed... on mine it did the barrel roll before I even completed typing it, because of the automatic results display feature.

However, "Let It Snow" no longer seems to work. I guess that was just for the holiday season. :(

You should watch a little documentary called The Cube about the military-industrial complex.

Whereas I can't get it to do crap with that same thing.

BRB, gotta submit "OMG shoes" to the video queue. Thanks for the inspiration, subby.

2012-01-31 8:46:15 AM
"Tilt" does the same thing.

Wookie_bw: "Tilt" does the same thing.

I did not see the letter L in there and got WAY too hopeful.

Oh, that one works as well. You just have to click the "images" link. ;)

You couldn't have come up with a punnier headline, subby? "Let me askew a question..." etc?

2012-01-31 8:58:24 AM
Why is everyone getting excited about google returning search results? Isn't that what the googles do?

2012-01-31 8:59:22 AM
I've done this in Safari on the iphone. It works, as does "tilt".

2012-01-31 9:00:58 AM
so whats supposed to happen? All I got is an artist askew productions and a list of definitions. I guess its a work filter or something

It doesn't work in IE, at leat for me. FF works though

2012-01-31 9:08:16 AM
This also works if you type in "tilt"

2012-01-31 9:09:10 AM
Appears to not work in Firefox on Debian either. With everything on the page allowed through NoScript and ABP it just gives normal results.

Odd, because these things usually do work for me.

2012-01-31 9:10:45 AM
Cool. now what happens if I google "BJ"...

2012-01-31 9:12:25 AM
I thought googling askew would show you a bunch of bad comedy movies. Oh wait that is view askew.

2012-01-31 9:13:01 AM
For some reason, I was expecting Kevin Smith.
