I don't think the author really knows what a cult film is, but then again, neither do I.

Because they wanted to include the 'Adult' (Debbie Does Dallas, Behind the Green Door, Emmanuel), and foreign,
The Story of O (1975) should have been there.

Other mentions not adult related:
Times Square (1980 - Great Soundtrack)
URGH! A Music War! (1982)
Decline of Western Civilization (1980)

FriarReb98: GAT_00: Didn't get past the first listing. 2001 is not a cult film.

This. There's at least a dozen on the list that fall into the "i don't think you understand what 'cult film' means" list. My personal favorite "WTF is this doing on this list" one is the Star Wars saga. Not the 1977 film mind you, the SAGA. Oh, and The Wizard of Oz and It's a Wonderful Life are on the list too.

That being said, the blank in the headline, by this list's line of logic, is Office Space. By a farking mile of red Swingline staplers.

Anything with Falconetti.

Daddy's Big Pink Man-Squirrel: Meet the Feebles (nsfw window) should be on there.

If only to let people know what Peter Jackson was up to before the D&D midget porn.

Love that movie and love surprising people with it.

A couple I haven't seen mentioned so far:
SLC Punk
True Romance

thattitanguy: I just feel like that the one thing that all those movies have in common are how their fans view and participate in their enjoyment of them and to dismiss movies like Star Wars because it was enormously successful or 2001: ASO because it won an Oscar for special effects or La belle et la bête because it isn't Avant-garde enough is splitting hairs that people aren't going to do for other entries on the list.

I'm kinda torn, because I like your argument, but I can see the flip side: I think the "generally accepted" definition of "cult movie" includes lack of commercial success/critical acclaim.

Missing from the list:

Office Space
The Postman (My guilty pleasure not sure why I like it but I do, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one)
The X-Files Movie (The first one not the second one. The second needs to have all copies, script, ect. set on fire and no one should ever speak of it ever again)

greenbean13: The Dark Backward needs more love as a cult film.

CheekyMonkey:I'm kinda torn, because I like your argument, but I can see the flip side: I think the "generally accepted" definition of "cult movie" includes lack of commercial success/critical acclaim.

I certainly understand that... though after watching everyone go all spazzy all over the The Hobbit trailer and the Prometheus non-trailer and knowing that both of those will be commercial successes, I sort of feel that makes my point for me. >_~

Pandora's Litterbox: To recap:

Thanks, man. That's quite helpful, actually, since I'd bookmarked the thread to revisit.
2011-12-21 12:11:26 PM
You all are welcome.
And thank you Wasn't Looking at his Neck for serving as my introduction to that list.

Three more suggestions for the thread:

Paul Bartel's deeply psychologically disturbing black (as midnight on a moonless night) comedy Private Parts from 1972.

Alain Robak's nifty little French maternal massacre creature feature Baby Blood from 1990.

Jerzy Skolimowski's 1970 teen psychosexual mindf*ck Deep End.

And, to lighten the mood, Chia-Liang Liu's utterly goofy (but endearingly so) martial arts musical comedy My Young Auntie from 1981.

Three Four more suggestions...

No one's reading this...right?

Yes, Private Parts is so good that I *did* feel compelled to list it twice.

I do think I'll go lurk moar for a longish while, now.

wambu: Hell on Wheels starring Marty Robbins and his tenor guitar.

Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl.
Night-time would find me in Rosa's cantina;
Music would play and Felina would whirl.

Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden;
I was in love but in vain, I could tell.

One night a wild young cowboy came in,
Wild as the West Texas wind.
Dashing and daring,
A drink he was sharing
With wicked Felina,
The girl that I loved.

So in anger I

Challenged his right for the love of this maiden.
Down went his hand for the gun that he wore.
My challenge was answered in less than a heart-beat;
The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor.

Just for a moment I stood there in silence,
Shocked by the FOUL EVIL deed I had done.
Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there;
I had but one chance and that was to run.

Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran,
Out where the horses were tied.
I caught a good one.
It looked like it could run.
Up on its back
And away I did ride,

Just as fast as I

Could from the West Texas town of El Paso
Out to the bad-lands of New Mexico.

Back in El Paso my life would be worthless.
Everything's gone in life; nothing is left.
It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden
My love is stronger than my fear of death.

I saddled up and away I did go,
Riding alone in the dark.
Maybe tomorrow
A bullet may find me.
Tonight nothing's worse than this
Pain in my heart.

And at last here I

Am on the hill overlooking El Paso;
I can see Rosa's cantina below.
My love is strong and it pushes me onward.
Down off the hill to Felina I go.

Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys;
Off to my left ride a dozen or more.
Shouting and shooting I can't let them catch me.
I have to make it to Rosa's back door.

Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel
A deep burning pain in my side.
Though I am trying
To stay in the saddle,
I'm getting weary,
Unable to ride.

But my love for

Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen,
Though I am weary I can't stop to rest.
I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle.
I feel the bullet go deep in my chest.

From out of nowhere Felina has found me,
Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side.
Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for,
One little kiss and Felina, good-bye.
