They'd better not get caught
They'll be dumped in institutions
Where they'll be drugged and shocked
'Til they come out born-again Christians

Firefox here @ work and it reads as NEWMAN

2011-11-15 05:02:23 PM
(From seinfeldscripts.com)

Postmaster General: "Oh, oh. Sit a bit. Sit a bit. I mean, after all, I drove all the way up here from D.C. just to talk to you. I even had to cancel a round of golf with the secretary of state. Do you like golf, Mr. Kramer? Kramer, I've been reading some of your material here. I gotta be honest with you: you make a pretty strong case. I mean, just imagine. An army of men in wool pants running through the neighborhood handing out pottery catalogs, door to door. Well, it's my job. And I'm pretty damn serious about it. In addition to being a postmaster, I'm a general. And we both know, it's the job of a general to, by God, get things done. So maybe you can understand why I get a little irritated when someone calls me away from my golf."
Kramer: "I'm very, very sorry."
Postmaster General: "Sure, you're sorry. I think we got a stack of mail out at the desk that belongs to you. Now, you want that mail, don't you Mr. Kramer?"

"Shouldn't you be wearing the bucket?"

dukwbutter: Maybe this helps a little...I looked at the post under Firefox, IE, Chrome, and finally on my iPhone 4S. Only with the iPhone 4S do i see "NEWMAN" in a sort of 1/2 step down font subscripted font.

Any clue how to make these other browsers display the font correctly? I even installed Safari on my PC but it didn't display correctly there either.

I'm using IE9 right now and it comes up just fine.

What is the point of those characters, anyway?

i.r.id10t: But whos name was on the envelope at the bottom of the pile? Obviously they are at fault...

NEIL: Wow! Look at all these letters! I thought Mr. Balowski said the last lot only moved out yesterday.

MIKE: They did, but they were illiterate.

NEIL: But they were philosophy students.

MIKE: So?

NEIL: Oh.

MIKE: Anyway, they´re probably bills.

NEIL: Who´s Bill???

Go to Link (new window) and download the Deja-Vu fonts. Put them in the fonts folder in Windows. Voila! You can now read the headline! Don't know how to install fonts on a Mac or Linux, though.

Sarah Palin's Conscience: Im_Gumby: Sarah Palin's Conscience: I don't get it...

Check the first link (new window)

Ah, if the headline said "NEWMAN" I would know where to look.

However, the headline reads "N(square square square square)N" on the mobile site.

Now it just reads (square) (square) (square) (square) (square) (square).

Still, one of the better headlines I've seen lately.

Doesn't work for me in Firefox, Safari, CrazyBrowser, IE or on my iPhone 3Gs. Haven't checked Chrome.

Worst. Headline. Ever.

Curious how that works? Fark doesn't use Deja Vu... it uses Arial doesn't it?

Maybe subby encoded specific fonts in the headline that doesn't use Arial?

I don't think you can do that, the headlines aren't allowed to have HTML in them, are they?

Works for me.

Operating System: Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600)
Browser: IE Version: 8.0.7600.16385

The list of installed fonts is too long to post here but I haven't installed any additional fonts other than what comes on my image.

Hmmm... could one use ALT-#### when submitting something? The subby could also have copied and pasted the headline from a word processing program that can encode special characters.

This reminds me of when my brother had a job delivering newspapers, and our garage rapidly filled up with bundles of newspapers.

"Aren't you supposed to be, you know, *delivering* those?"

Apparently he just cruised around the villages, scavenging free stuff (like a weight bench) and firewood.

"I had a paper route when I was a kid, I was a paper boy. I was supposed to go to 2,000 houses... or 2 dumpsters!"

The headline looked okay on my Windows 7 laptop without needing to install additional fonts. The headline looked okay on my Windows XP desktop after installing Deja-Vu fonts. Not sure why.

Here's the offending UNICODE HTML string.

[ampersand]#628;[ampersand]#7431;[ampersand]#7457;[ampersand]#7437 ;[ampersand]#7424;[ampersand]#628

I'm guessing that IE can't handle the extended Unicode set (7XXX numbers), but other browsers are somehow compliant.

None of my browsers display it correctly though (firefox, IE, safari, or Chrome). The only way I can see it correctly is on my iPhone 4S w/ Safari. Interesting....

That's weird... I'm not sure how else to help. You might want to check out http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/fonts.html. He has a large repository of fonts and Unicode resources.
