At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. There is a certain synergy amongst those that push the envelope and think outside the box to identify and promote linguistic paradigm shifts. Our current words are not sustainable because globalization means constant sea change. Use your skillset to help us grow the language instead of complaining!

FTA: Lippert explained on "The Early Show" that the term really caught on when Bethenny Frankel started using it on "The Real Housewives of New York" and later in naming her popular Skinnygirl products franchise.

"It was taboo before," Lippert said. "Bethenny...(is) not afraid to be brash and direct and say, 'Why don't you put your fork down?"'

Shut your whore mouth.

Sounds like another mega-trend sweeping the greater New York New Jersey area that is very important to people who live in the greater New York New Jersey area, and since that includes the ignorant dimwits at CBS News, advertizing executives, and assorted style-conscious denizens of the greater New York New Jersy area, it somehow dribbles its way into "national" news. Soon this latest local mega-trend will be forgotten, because fashion is all about what's current and new, so all mega-trends are short-lived. That's actually the dictionary definition of flyover country: The places where people never become aware of the latest mega-trend sweeping the greater New York New Jersey area, and foolishly go about their lives without detecting and following the thousands of ephemeral fads that people in the greater New York New Jersey area invent and discard at a hectic rate in order to distract themselves from the fact that they live in the greater New York New Jersey area.

I have absolutely no idea what the hell that article was talking about.

Who the fark is Bethenny? Is skinny a new buzzword, in that it means something else? Or is it a buzzword in that people are using it to... I have no idea how to even ask what this is about...

Thanks for the lowdown chief.
Now that the news has reported it, skinny will no longer be cool.
I propose the next cool word be corduroy or ribbed.

When I think of skinny I think of anorexic girls with ribs showing who barely fit in a size 0. It isn't a positive word in my mind.

A size 4 fit girl is thin, but definitely not my idea of skinny.

I was trying to edumacate my aunt on her job (long story), and her job involves selling "the cloud" to customers. Nevermind she doesn't know what "the cloud" is, but she's gonna sell it as best she can. Her first question "Why do you not like the cloud?"

Didn't we do this five years ago already? Sigh.

It's okay, you'll hear about this "skinny" trend in a couple years, after Carrie Underwood picks up on it.

The surest way to know something is not a buzzword is for the media to say it is. A couple of companies using it in marketing doesn't mean everyone is.

Wait, the article is about skinny jeans? I thought those were only in style for a few months like 5 years ago? That fad is still in play?

I would have thought by now all of the muffintops the jeans created would have stopped it.

2011-11-04 1:25:14 PM
So, what's the skinny on this new word?

2011-11-04 1:30:53 PM
Of course, one of the most powerful tools in the marketing toolbox is to make people feel like they have to follow the latest trend, lest they be perceived by the rest as out-of-it, not hip, and not up-to-the-minute with the newest fad. I wonder how many billions worth of useless junk has been sold on the strength of that alone? Check the landfills.

Jake Havechek: Chris Christie has his own gravity.

It's a fun insult and sounds all sciencey but gravity is a property of mass so everyone has his own gravity, including you, Jake Havechek.

FTA: "It was taboo before," Lippert said. "Bethenny...(is) not afraid to be brash and direct and say, 'Why don't you put your fork down?"'

farking simpletons. I farking hate these shiatty fashionista jerkoffs. If you're not 5'7" and 94lbs then you're (a) "fat", and (2) lack the discipline to push away from the puddin' trough.

And in my house "skinny" is an insulting perjorative because it means you've got no muscle tone. Bony chicks with knees bigger than their thighs make me want to eat my own vomit, so emaciated and revolting they are.

and I'm a 5'9" male, 190 lbs and don't know my %bodyfat but I completed the DeathRide this summer so I'm not a sloppy doughboy, just a misanthropic miscreant. I must be at the gym in 23 minutes. This was a cool story.
