How did "snakes" make it into the headline, but not "BarnYard?" I mean, your first option is "BarnYard." Thats funny.

Deaf Dog Awareness Week? We need to be aware of that? Like it's my fault if the dog can't hear the horn on my truck and I hit it. Sheesh.

/Rant mode on

I e-mailed one of these so-called pet-placement people for abandoned dogs. The family and I recently built a house on 15 acres and we wanted an outdoor dog (beagle, actually). I made it perfectly clear to them the dog would stay outside unless there was extreme weather. This person had the nerve to tell me that dogs are social animals and should live in the house with you because they wanted to be part of a family. I explained, calmly at first, that most of our time is spent outside and the dog would be all alone in the house, this is a hunting breed - needs to be outside, these dogs you are putting up for adoption noone wants anyway, they would be going to a good home, etc...

She wouldn't budge. What an asshole to deal with. I apologize for the long post.
/Bought a beagle puppy from a hunter down the road.

petfinder is actually a great resource, it helps get animals that are otherwise forgotten a little bit more attention. All they are is a database!! They don't have anything to do with the actual animals, and adoptions thereof. So if some old lady adopted a big dog, and the big dog went mean, it has everything to do with the idiots that let a little old lady take home a big-assed dogs. Nothing to do with the database that she saw him on...

That's like you wife trying to kill you after she found you looking at pr0n you found here on fark. then fark being blamed for your almost-killedness, or death. Fark is a database, etc.

The one difference is that on fark, there is control over what's posted and what's not. At petfinder, the control if quite limited... which is a problem sometimes. I've seen a dog who's actually a small child before... up for adoption. I think that was a joke, and they removed it a short time later.

We tried to get a dog from a few different adoption agencies that had listings on this site. The people never called or returned our e-mails. We just went to the local pound and got a great dog and he was $75 instead of $300 that some of these "adoption" agancies wanted.

need a female chihuahua... my dog pedro is tired of humping that old-ass teddy bear...
2003-09-29 02:54:30 PM
damn joe cowboy, that's a nice piece of land you got there! We ended up getting a Wiemeraner/choco lab mix from the pound. HE's a great dog and we didn't have to put up with the preachy people we encountered on petfinder. I filled out more forms for one adoption agency than I did to get a mortgage on my house!

oh and JoeCowboy, of course they wouldn't have let you have the dog. IF all I heard from you was, he'd be outside all the time except for bad weather, i wouldn't give you the dog either. Now if you had explained to me, that the dog would go where you go, and you're normally outside, but at night when you're inside the dog is too, then I would say, yeah, sure, great! take him! because dogs are social animals, they like to be with their pack. yanno... like yer family... and I'm even ok with a dog being outside during the day -in good weather- if you're away at work or something. (toys, etc, are a plus) but outside 24-7, whether you're out there or not, that i don't like.

yes i have control over who gets animals at my shelter. heh. /shelter worker rant

Petfinder is a great organization. They take a bunch of no-kill shelters and connect their inventory to one, main database so you can scan your zipcode for the kind of pet you want, whether that be species, breed or more specific like age of pet and if they're kid friendly. I recommend going there to start your search, even if you want a pure breed, they've got lots with papers, though inventory is usually sparse. I found my dog through there and love her madly.

As for not adopting dogs to be outside animals, they have to have policies in place that are designed for the overall well-being of the adoptees. Generally, I agree with the notion that dogs are pack animals and want to be inside with you. The fact that you may have an outside-oriented occupation for which your dog may join you is compelling, but I bet you're also few and far between. They're just trying to make sure that farkers aren't adopting dogs to be kept outside and tied up.

MutualLove: The story I remember is that a Doberman was sent to the Animal Humane Society or some national animal shelter thingy to be euthanized because it had attacked someone. The AHS or shelter didn't kill it and instead sold it to some old lady who then was killed by it.

Chinchillas rock. Just not during daylight hours, or in warm temperatures, or if they're feeling moody. Otherwise, they rock.

i had to get interviwed and undergo reference checks to get my adopted doggie. the interviewer basically kept looking out our window at the dog beach across the street and all our neighbours with their dogs and told us that we'd be sure to get him.

worth it. my dog is the best dog in the world and when I'm with him I feel like I am 10 years old.
